The battery that I received is different than the one pictured. It is enclosed in the metal enclosure that has illuminated voltmeter, so you always know when to charge it. It is a double edged sword though as it became larger and a bit heavier. I would buy the light again.
UPDATE 2015: I used it for 4 years 5 times a week just under an hour every time. This is for winter days, basically during winter daytime saving period the light is on every day, although I often used at day light. I forget to take it off during summer days and although rarely used it stays on the bicycle. The black anodized surface turned light gray under the bright South California sun but other that that the light was working as on the day one one the original battery. I had a reservation that the rubber O ring would crumble due to the sun exposure but surprisingly I was wrong.
Now my bicycle got stolen together with the light so I am buying a new one without reservation.
One thing I do want it to improve is the direction of the light. Most bicycles' seat tube where the light normally attaches angled back so the light points into the ground a few meters from the bicycle. It would be very easy to make some wedge that props the light in the horizontal direction but I am too lazy to do that. Instead I tucked a piece of paper towel under the bottom portion of the light. It kind of works but I loose it after a few moths.
Because of the difficulty with the bezel, I usually keep this tail light on during breaks, even though I turn my other 4-6 lights off. Even so, battery life has been more than sufficient. After my last 3+ hour ride, the battery voltage was over 7.8V, indicating that there was lots of battery life left. This light is bright enough that it lights up the road behind the bike. I'm not totally convinced of the visibility offered by this light though because it is a small light, but I can't remove a star over this weak opinion. I'm adding a couple Planet Bike Blinky Superflash Tail Light clones to either side of this light, all of which are mounted on my rack.
If you wish to remove the bar mount and attach this light to a rack using a screw, you'll need a M4-.7 hardware. I got mine from Home Depot. Be sure to get plenty of washers or cut down the screw and use a thread lock compound because the screw doesn't thread far into the light...I found out the hard way about this.
In short, I think this is a great light for commuting and short rides, but is heavier than I'd like for touring, especially since I'd only ride during the day while touring.
UPDATE: I've been using this light for nearly two months now. The bezel is still awfully tight, but it's much easier to tighten when it's securely mounted to the bike. The rubber o-rings allows enough movement that I felt the need to hold the base of the light with my other hand while turning on the light. Once I mounted the light to my bike rack with zip ties it was much easier to adjust.Read more ›
I love this light because it is so bright. My typical use is during the day so brightness is very important to me in order get a driver's attention that may not otherwise see you. The battery life is also quite long. I typically recharge once a week but could probably go two to three weeks between charges if I wanted. But since the MagicShine headlight has to be charged (it won't last as long), I will charge the tail light at the same time.
A couple months after my first light, it stopped working. The outer LEDs would turn on but the bright center LED would not. MagicShine was contacted and they had me send in the light and then promptly shipped me a new light which has been working flawlessly for over a year now. The only other issue I have had is that one of the chargers stopped working. It was out of warranty so I couldn't get a replacement for free. But since I have four MagicShine lights (two tail and two head), this wasn't a big inconvenience to have one less charger.
Get this light (and one of their head lights) and be seen!
The bezel which controls the light's settings turns nice and freely on the unit I received -- earlier reviews had mentioned that it tended to stick and rip the internal wiring. Hope not to be taking mine out in the rain, can see how that might be a problem if water were somehow to infiltrate the bushing. Interesting thing about selecting the various modes: there are no set positions, you just have to keep turning in either direction until you find the one you want. This means you can't simply reach behind on your bike without looking and turn the unit on and off by feel, you need to see the light to know what's going on. Unplugging the light turns any setting to off, so you also cannot use the connecter on the fly as a switch.Read more ›
