Book Description

Using nature as her guide, the author unlocks the mysteries of color and relates color theory to readers' daily observations. She then presents instruction on creating iridescence, luminosity, luster, shadows, mist, and highlights and includes information on linear perspective and pattern drafting. Note: The printing quality in this copy may vary from the original offset printing edition and may look more saturated due to printing on demand by a high-quality printer on uncoated paper. The information presented in this version is the same as the most recent printed edition. Any pattern pullouts have been separated and presented as single pages. 5.0 out of 5 stars the best book I've seen on the use of color in quilting, May 12, 2000
This review is from: Magical Effects of Color (Paperback)
This book is a must-have for any serious quilter. It contains the most comprehensive information on all aspects of color as they relate specifically to quilting, with marvelous full color illustrations that amplify the already-excellent written material. The color photos of magnificent quilts are in themselves worth the price of the book. This is a book to be consulted over and over-- a complete reference manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use this book for more than quilting, June 23, 2007
This review is from: Magical Effects of Color (Paperback)
While this book was written for quilters, it's a great design resource for any needle artist. The author defines and explains terms such as depth, iridescence, luminosity, luster, opalescence, and transparency. She explains design and perspective for the quilter, but what are fibers if not unwoven cloth?
Even if you have no ambition to design and slavishly follow the designer's color recommendations, I'd suggest acquiring this book. It will help you understand why a designer made certain color choices and what effect he/she was attempting to achieve.

1.0 out of 5 stars Print on Demand, July 5, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Magical Effects of Color (Paperback)
I purchased the book on color theory in quilting without noticing that it is a 'print on demand' copy of the book. The concept of 'print on demand' is fine if only the text matters however there are numerous examples of color theory throughout the book and all of the images are very degraded and lifeless. Disappointingly each quilt appears washed out, no luminosity or subtle shades of color are appreciable. The didactic analysis is very interesting and reflects the authors thorough knowledge of the subject but as she explains her theories you cannot escape the frustration of referring to the numerous beautiful quilts which are presented as blurry images over and over: Quilter's Hell. The book is great but save your money for the real thing!
