Relaxing but not Elevator Music!,
This review is from: Magical Healing Mantras (Audio CD)
"Magical Healing Mantras" by Namaste is a rich tapestry of 25 talented musicians from around the world, playing guitars, flutes, sitars and exotic instruments. I love the eclectic instrument mix, as well as the male and female vocal harmonies. I first heard it at a new age bookstore, where its captivating music soothed and relaxed me to a near meditative state. Yet this cd's livelier than typical meditation music.Cut #1, "shiva shambho" has a low background hum, similar to bag pipes, which clears out the lower charkas. Combined with a catchy tune, wonderful harmonies, percussion, and woody flute, this song would be the hit if this were a commercial album. Cut #2, "govindam" is more meditative, and hauntingly beautiful with woody flute leads. Cuts #3 and #4, "jay shree krishna" and "aum shree ram" begin with good folk guitar, particularly cut #4. They're not bad, but the voices take over and overshadow the guitar more than I would like. Cut #5, "jaya shiva shankara" features female voices singing a gorgeous relaxing melody with a simpler instrument mix. In cut #6, "govinda jaya jaya" a monk-like voice calls out chants and a male chorus responds, complimented by Indian-style sitar music. I like both cuts. The lead female voice on cut #7, "gayatri mantra" reminds me of Loreena McKennitt on "The Book of Secrets" cd. In perfect harmony with a male voice, and various stringed instruments + flute, this song is wonderful. Bottom line: Beautiful, relaxing, interesting--a cd worth having.

I spend a lot of time singing Sanskrit devotional chants, and I'm not much of a fan of "New Age" music (you know -- the wandering, aimless stuff that sounds the same whether you play it forward or backward.) I was really very pleased by this album. It does a marvellous job of presenting traditional Sanskrit chants in a musical framework that's comfortable to western ears. I've listened to this CD over and over, and it never fails to enchant me. [....]

Joy!!,

I have a number of chant CDs... many of which have that haunting sound, evoking a sense of a dark Tibetan cave. While that can seem very 'sacred', it also can be somewhat stiffling at times for these Western ears. And then along came "Magical Healing Mantras". This CD seems to embrace the philosophy that chants/mantras can be just as sacred by creating an environment of sunshine, gentle breezes and uplifting joy! It not only calms me to listen (and sing along- as the mantras are familiar and easy to grasp) but uplifts me and swells my heart with happiness.Buy it, play it often, let it become a part of you. The world will be a better place because of the happiness it will stir in you... Namaste!
