Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Frankly, I'm surprised nobody wrote this book sooner. There are many books about the magic in places all over the world, but leave it to Scott Cunningham and David Harrington to write a book about the magic in the place where you spend the most time: your home. The Magical Household is so rich with information about everything from purification to protection that I hardly know where to begin.

Every part of your home, inside and outside, is covered in this book. Outside are the garage and garden, windows and doorways. This book gives you ways to bring in the good — health, love, peace, wealth, friends — and keep out the bad — disease, accidents, poverty, unwanted intruders.

Magical tips are given for each room inside the house, too. Rituals, incenses, and techniques to provide you with what is needed in your life are described. Whether it is the kitchen or living room, bedroom or den, you will find magical advice and folklore that can bring magic into your life.

Sometimes the magic is as easy as moving furniture and hanging an herb above a door. Other times it might be a brief rite combined with candles of a particular color. It's all described here.

The information comes from all over the world. Some comes from Europe, other pieces come from Asia, Hawaii, and even ancient Egypt. The book is serious, but it is also fun. Scott and David write so well that it seems more like they are talking to you than writing a book.

The Magical Household is for anybody who lives anywhere. That means me. That means you. So right now I'm going to lean back in my oak chair, get up from my teak desk, go over to an oak bookcase and go through this book again. That's where you'll find what these different types of wood can magically provide. This book is a gem!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mindfulness of One's Surroundings, July 9, 2002

This review is from: The Magical Household: Spells & Rituals for the Home (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) (Paperback)
This book is like all of Scott Cunningham's books, easy to understand, helpful, creative, basic yet founded on deeper knowledge. It has a lot of interesting lore and folk magic and much Feng Shui type of ideas. It discusses correspondences in good detail. It has information on cleansings and purifications, pets and plants, the household altar, the hearth or "heart" of the home, furnishings, moving, protection, the bath and the kitchen...even the garage. It is useful and grounded and homey. It will aid in focusing intent and provide inspiration for making one's dwelling into one's truly magical and personal home. Most of us, whether witch or not, instinctively surround ourselves with little "magics" that help us to feel comfortable and in "our own space." This book puts some thoughtfulness and understanding to the concept of personalizing our space and encourages creative and harmonious atmosphere where good vibrations abound. Try it. You'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eclectic guide to creating a safe spiritual space., December 25, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Magical Household: Spells & Rituals for the Home (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) (Paperback)
One of the things that I adore about this book is that I picked it up at a time when I had no idea what I was doing with Wicca and Paganism, but found this book so accessible that I began using ideas from it. The most important way that it was accessible to me was that I found things suggested in it that I'd already been doing unconsciously.

"I suggest that the only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little farther down our particular path than we have yet gone ourselves." I'm certain that E. M. Forster was right. I found Cunningham's explanations of certain things I'd been doing intriguing, even if those explanations didn't quite ring true for me. And from there, I was better able to take some of his other houselore seriously.

When he can offer them, Cunningham suggests multiple ways to address an issue, and different cultures' explanations for why and how a certain tradition works. Indeed, this book was the first I'd ever heard of Feng Shui, long before it became the popular money-making scheme Westerners have turned it into. He devotes as much time to it as he does to any alternative, which will probably keep this book on my Craft shelf for a long time.

Find this book, take your pick, and create your own path.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only there were a hardcover addition of this book..., January 12, 1999

This review is from: The Magical Household: Spells & Rituals for the Home (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) (Paperback)
This is one of Scott Cunninghams's best. Each chapter covers a different area of the house, with a little background information, then a listing of spells, and where they originated from(almost EVERY spell is backed up with it's historical origin). The format is tooooooo easy to follow and none of the spells require elaborate ritual tools. A great book for Pagan mothers looking to add a flavor of the old school cottage Witch into their home.
