Book Description

August 14, 2010
Chris grew up with great potential for success. Her first book, No Guarantees, was published days after turning 20. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder around the same time, no one could have predicted the course her life would take. Mania, depression, psychosis, 10 admissions to psychiatric hospitals, more than 25 different psychiatric medications, 17 psychiatrists, and at least 10 therapists. She used marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, LSD, mescaline, PCP, and whatever else she could get her hands on. By 26, she lived with homelessness and a serious addiction to crack. To navigate her life, it takes an alternate universe, a parent who never gives up, and a multitude of caring people to keep her alive. Years later, Chris has stumbled through bipolar disorder and its symptoms. She's learned what it takes to be part of the world. It'll never be easy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Wells' writing has both a lyrical intensity...and a deadpan humor that dispels bathos. She manages to convey a whirlwind of narcotized craziness with remarkable clarity and insight. An entrancing journey through the lower depths.

From the Author

"Magical Shrinking: Stumbling Through Bipolar Disorder," is my personal account of a journey through severe mental illness and addiction. My first book, "No Guarantees," was published by New Discovery Press in 1993 and describes overcoming addiction as a teenager.

I thought I was destined for success until the symptoms of bipolar disorder became undeniable. Unable to free myself from depression, mania, and psychosis, at 21 years old I was committed to a state psychiatric hospital in New Haven, Connecticut.

Following my first hospitalization, I sought comfort in a variety of illicit drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, crack, heroin, methamphetamine, and others. During my twenties I was prescribed over 25 different psychiatricmedications. I was hospitalized 10 times for bipolar disorder. For years, I tried to find success in college or the workplace, only to fail again and again.

Years later, I married, had a child, and I'm trying to live a "normal" life. I graduated from college, graduate school, and am now working on my doctorate in psychology.

One factor contributing to my success is a curious phenomenon I've dubbed the "Alternate Universe," a complex coping mechanism developed in childhood to deal with trauma.

Throughout my life, I've lived in two realities. I've been fortunate to have family and other caring people to help me stabilize, overcome addiction, and continue to grow.

I prefer to be called Chris. I live in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, with my husband, Jason, and our son, Jack. Jack is four, and the greatest little kid ever. He's amazing. Jason is also amazing. Truth behind mental illness October 4, 2010
By Susan
Format:Paperback
Incredible story of overcoming the hurdles of mental illness and addiction. The author takes you through a true encounter of her life struggling with the stigma associated with bipolar disorder and drug addition and how it affected her relationships with family & friends, her performance in school & jobs, and her own safety. The book leaves you cheering for her every step of the journey. I couldn't put the it down. It is a truly amazing story of everything the author overcame and the resiliency she exhibited to accomplish all she has now.

Outstanding book. Must read.

Magical Shrinking September 6, 2010
Format:Paperback
Going to read it again. Have read it cover to cover and am just astounded how this person has turned out to be. The bravery of a young woman going through some horrific parts in her life to come out as the person she is now is amazing.
Dealing with Bi-polar is difficult and stories like this need to be out there more for those who need a hand in life, to know that there is hope over that bridge. This isn't just about bi-polar though it is a big part of her life. It is about how she coped and got through her life with it, very serious drug addiction and other tendencies.

Great book. My husband will read this as well as soon as he can.

Life can be ugly October 6, 2010
By Joanna
Format:Paperback
In her book, Magical Shrinking, Stumbling Through Bipolar Disorder, Chris Wells opens herself up to share a past that most people would try to keep hidden. She provides an amazing account of her most personal experiences through years of self destruction through a view of life distorted by bipolar disorder and drug abuse. I found it hard to put the book down anxious to know how she eventually got her life in order. This would be a good book for anyone wanting to understand the affect of bipolar disorder, a good book for anyone trying to understand and provide support for a troubled individual. Some people may be offended by the hard-core language and content but keep in mind, it is real life at its ugliest.
