Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The title says it all, or most of it, since the snowman at the center of this book is not only magical but also very shiny, an effect the publisher describes on its Web site as a silvery sparkling finishing. That novelty aside, this is a gentle story of a little rabbit who gets lost in the forest while looking for berries. The snowman, whom Little Rabbit had spent the morning creating before his father had stated that it wasn’t real, comes to life and helps Little Rabbit get back home. Walters keeps the text spare and simple (The world whisked by in a shimmer of silver frost), and Edgson’s illustrations feature amiable creatures in a convincingly wintry setting. The action scenes, in which the rabbit and snowman slide down hills and over frozen ponds, are particularly effective, punctuated with sound effects like Whooooooooosh! and Wheeeeeeeeeee! that should appeal to young sledding aficionados. Preschool-Grade 1. --Abby Nolan

Little Rabbit and his Daddy had been very busy all morning in the wintery landscape building a big snowman. He had nice button eyes, nose and belly button and wore a red and white striped hat and scarf. Little Bunny stood in awe of the creation, but his Daddy wanted him to "find some berries" for their tea. Little Rabbit was assured that his snowman would be just fine if he went in search of the berries because, as his Daddy said, "He's just a snowman." Little Rabbit knew differently though and gave the snowman a big hug.

Very soon Little Rabbit was hopping and bopping through the snow-covered fields picking berries and singing, "Mmm, one for the basket and one for me." He sallied here and there picking berries and chasing a robin as the snowflakes began to fall. Before you know it, he was totally lost. He put his hand up to his very worried face. Very soon "a soft light sparkled through the trees." It was his snowman and he really was real. The snowman was shimmering in the dusky forest. Would he be able to guide Little Rabbit home? Would Daddy believe that the snowman was real?

This is a magical little story that will win over the reader with its whimsical artwork and charming storyline. Little Rabbit was simply adorable and the amazing thing about his snowman was that his body was glittery and raised, something little ones will love. It was lots of fun to glide my hand across the pages he was on and feel this crusty little snowman. The texture, amazingly enough, was almost like the real crust of snow when there is a light drizzle or fog that has passed through during the night. This is one appealing book that little snow bunnies are going to adore!

This delightful, large book (approx. 10 1/2" x 11 1/4") has the snowman embossed everywhere he is featured which is a great sensory tool for young ones. Little Rabbit believes that Snowman is real which of course his father does not believe. What happens when Little Rabbit goes off collecting berries and gets lost? Who will rescue him?

A wonderful, well-written and illustrated book where a snowman comes to life.
