Review

Yusuf Khudabanda has turned his back on his family and his legacy to become a Muslim scholar. On his return to his father's home, he encounters a beautiful dancing girl who makes her living pleasing men for money. Despite his faith, Yusuf spends the night with the enticing Alifa. That one night brings back the memory of what he was and still is, a shapeshifter who becomes a panther. He despises this part of himself that he has inherited from his father and he refuses to become the shaman that he is destined to be. For Alifa, the night with Yusuf meant more to her than the money she collected from him. She hates what she has to do to feed herself and her three siblings, but she has no choice since her parents are dead and she has no prospect for a husband. Her younger brother Kasilo is gravely ill but the shaman refuses to help until he is paid. When her other brother is caught stealing so she can stop selling herself, Alifa is helpless to protect him. But Yusuf intervenes and their lives become intertwined. Promising to take Alifa and her family to his father, Yusuf wonders why he is involving himself in their lives. During their journey, he becomes more attached to this little family and the woman who is fighting so hard to take care of them. Alifa is strong-willed and proud, and Yusuf finds himself wanting to help her and to spend another night holding her in his arms. Alifa makes it clear to Yusuf that she is finished with her previous profession and refuses his advances. When she discovers that he is a shapeshifter she is upset that he will not heal Kasilo, not understanding that Yusuf refuses to become what his father is. Even though they seem to argue constantly, there is a strong bond between the two that cannot be ignored. Fate has brought Yusuf and Alifa together, but it is love that they find in each other.Claire Delacroix takes us on an exciting journey to a faraway land! Magical!
