Book Description

November 2001
This is a book about Progressive Witchcraft which the authors see as being more eclectic and universal than Alexandrian and Gardnerian Wicca. Witchcraft is composed of three main elements - Magic, Mysticism and Religion - each treated in depth, and integrated in this excellent, practical book. Witchcraft contains elements of Shamanism and this book includes techniques such as dance, breathing techniques and the use of sacred herbs to explore other states of consciousness. Techniques and teaching from many different countries and cultures are integrated and used to great effect, drawn from the courses and teachings carried out by the authors. The book gives a solid grounding in personal magical work, aimed primarily at the sole practitioner, though members of groups will also benefit from the teachings given.

More About the Author

David Rankine is an author, esoteric researcher and Qabalist who lives and works on the Welsh borders with his wife, the author Sorita d'Este and their son. David has been writing and contributing articles to a variety of publications, and has given lectures, workshops and presentations since the early 1980's.

His personal passions include the Qabalah, Medieval and Renaissance Magick (particularly the Grimoires), and Greco-Egyptian Magic. Since 2003 he has been working with occult legend Stephen Skinner, co-writing and producing the highly acclaimed Sourceworks of Ceremonial Magic series. These books make available for the first time previously unpublished manuscripts and Grimoires of great significance to the development of modern magick. He is a member of Societas Magica and ESSWE (European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism).

David has also contributed to a number of anthologies, journals and magazines over the years. These include essays in Hekate: Keys to the Crossroads (2006), Horns of Power (2008) and Howlings (2008); as well as numerous articles in esoteric publications such as The Watkins Review, Skoob Occult Review, Nuit-Isis, Celtic Dawn, Chaos International, Witchcraft & Wicca, Pagan Dawn, Talking Stick, Vitriol, Evohe! and Dragon's Brew. In fact, David was the editor of Evohe! (1986-88) and Dragon's Brew (1991-96).

During the period 2002-04 he contributed around 300 articles to the Enhancing Your Mind Body Spirit international part-work magazine produced by D'Agostini. His contributions to this very successful worldwide publication included articles and entire sections on Crystals, Healing, Chakras, Qabalah, Shamanism, Ancient Egyptian Magick, Alchemy and Angels.

Since the early 1980s David has facilitated many dozens of workshops and public ceremonies throughout the UK, since 2001 often with Sorita. He has also given lectures and presentations throughout the UK and Europe on his work and the subjects he is passionate about - including the Grimoire Tradition, Angelic Magic, Egyptian and Celtic Mythology and spirituality.

David has appeared on many television and radio programs over the years. His work and interviews with him have featured in numerous publications including TIME OUT, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Alternative London and many others. More recently he was interviewed for That's Wierd on Glastonbury Radio about the Qabalah (1 hour program, syndicated worldwide) and BBC Radio London on the Tarot and Dr Rudd's Goetia. He has also featured on television programs on Channel 5, ITV, BBC and Sky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favour and get this book, August 18, 2004

This review is from: Magick without Peers: A Course in Progressive Witchcraft for the Solitary Practioner (Paperback)
If you are looking for a book that while explains about Witchcraft, offers more practical workings as well as other magickal techniques then this is the book for you. "Magick Without Peers" is based on the correspondence course the authors produced on Progressive Witchcraft which, in their own words, is a further evolution of Alexandrian and Gardnerian Wicca.

There are three main elements to the Craft which the authors define as Magick, Mysticism and Religion. Unlike other books these elements are covered in depth in this book, and are produced in a manner which is practical for the reader. But there is more.

This book seems to continue where other books leave off. It covers many techniques (some not covered in your Scott Cunningham/Farrar books) and visualisations, meditations and rituals. There are also information about the Sabbats and Esbats, a personal insight into the God and Goddess, working with natural energies such as site guardians, and so much more! All written professionally and in an unpretentious manner that has a double benefit of being practical.

While written specifically for the solitary practitioner, with a bit of hindsight, this book can be easily adapted to group workings.

David Rankine is a well known and highly respected writer/author in the UK. He has over 20 years experience in the occult realms. Ariadne was his wife at the time this book was written. I personally was a student of theirs in the 1990s (both in actual and correspondence) so can vouch for the teachings of this course.

Do yourself and favour and grab a copy of this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but common, October 23, 2007

I have to admit that with the price I had to pay for this book and the amount of 5 star reviews it was receiving, I expected something much, much better. Although this book does contain a lot of information about various magical techniques I feel that it lacks depth. Also, as an herbalist, I am annoyed that it contains a large section of herb lore, but does not list botanical names for individual herbs. If you are buying this book because it proclaims information on pyschoactive plants, don't. This section is lousy. The herbal section has several problems, besides the lack of botanical nomenclature, it also has pieces of information missing concerning dosage in dealing with a highly poisonous plant.
There is useful information here, but it is just another's BOS, and I find that this all too common that people are publishing their BOS's without the well researched depth to go with it.
Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where have they been hiding this one?, January 23, 2001

I have never heard of these authors before, nor the book, but recently whilst surfing the web came accross a UK website ... singing the praises. A few days later, not looking for the book, I saw it in a local bookshop and thought that is was too much of a coincidence to ignore any longer.

And right I was!

This is the most comprehensive and well written book on Wicca I have yet found. It does not assume anything, it explains everything in plain language and with no mumbo jumbo.

I have been practising Wicca for about 10 years now, and still found this book helpful! For beginners it would be THE ULTIMATE HANDBOOK.
