Missing Key Ingredients but still a good book,
By El Brujo "Brujo Hechisero" (Lowell, Ma) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
This is an excellent Formulary, but I do not mean to bust any ones bubble, but most of the formulas are not complete. The formulas are based on those traditionally used in Santeria, Brujeria and Voodoo, "New Orleans Voodoo" and as a Brujo I often make most of these formulas myself for my clientel, but although many are complete to a point, many are missing major ingredients, that any experienced Brujo would know. But as a formulary it is good, I like it, found it helpful, one of the best of it's kind. But still the book is missing the proper way of making the formulas, the proper time, and prayer or chant, the best day, time, and Moon phase in which to make them. And also many are missing Key Ingredients, especially in the Powder Department, as well as the Oil section. What Oil, "Key Oil" would one use. "Usually a Pure Virign Olive Oil. And the Powders, most have all the ingredients, but what you will get is a mixture of a bunch of herbs, not actually a Powder. Without those essential key ingredients to make them a Powder. They would work great in conjure bags, mojo, and so forth. And since I know most of what is missing. I find it still to be a great book. Also most of the Powders, and Formulary in general, do waver from both Black and White Magic. Something that will turn of the Wiccan community. But for Brujos, and Santeros, this is a great book. The only problem, as I have stated. It's Like Making Chicken Soup without the Chicken or the Broth.

This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
A very good book for incense and potions oils and powders for magickal purposes. Good for all level witches, very fun also. Many items in this book were at the magickal childe bookstore in NYC. as healing incense, esbat, sabat incense, oil dressings for spell candels, like money drawing oil! and then some more powerful ones were included too. An experienced blender would know, like the Black arts mix... not my cup of tea but very popular for those black cat lover broom stick types a must buy for those who like mixing up stuff and I think there was very good blends for planetary incenses jupiter venus saturn sun moon mercury(hard to find recipes) learn by doing book )

Easy to Use Authentic Magick,
By A Customer
This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
Not new age drivel or incomprehensible mysticism. Book I is simple, easy to use stuff that does not require anything more than a little effort. Magick that is of value to people throughout the occult spectrum. I would recommend the Companion Volume, Book II as equally important.

Very advanced BIBLE into the inner workings of magick,
This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
The MAGICKAL FORMULARY SPELLBOOK was first written by Herman Slater for his own use in his NYC magick store while preparing his closely guarded secret magick formuale for his clients. Herman's bookstore was always a learning center for controversal works, and he never discriminated against different forms of magick. So BOOK I was written as a guide into magick with the reader deciding what path to take. It's a very advanced SPELLBOOK.MAGICKAL FORMULARY SPELLBOOK I was designed by Herman to be used with it's companion MAGICKAL SPELLBOOK BOOK II. Book II includes all the ingredients and writes about moon phases, best time, answering readers questions, how to make the formulas in BOOK I, Oils, Candles, Tarot, etc. and includes so much more information that really must be used with BOOK I. Although BOOK I and BOOK II talks a bit of some black magick, BOOK II goes on to describe how easy it is to always substitute white. I love both these books -- and use them everyday.

Dont fool with this book,

This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
This is a very serious and profound reference book. Written by the owner of the famous Magickal Childe bookstore in Manhattan, I shopped for all my spells in that shop, and it surely was an experience.Well now you can recapture that something magickal, with this special spellbook, reborn again. I waited for three years for this book to be in print again.

The Hermanary,

This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
There isn't anything so consistently good as this. I guard my copy like the dragon. Herman's formulary is extraordinary. It goes in and out of print, and gets rare. The recipes are dynamite. It contains recipes that are Good for Wicca, Hoodoo, Voodoo, Vudou, Santeria, and ceremonial magic. Herman knew a lot.

Not Entirely Accurate,

This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
This book is good for what it does. There are plenty of formulas related to Wicca and Hoodoo. I cannot vouch for the Wicca formulas in this book, but I can comment on the Hoodoo formulas. The formulas for Hoodoo are not accurate. For instance, one of the crossing powders ingredients is Myrrh. Myrrh has always been used as a purification/blessing ingredient. It smells nice, but it does not belong in crossing powder. A better bet would be Cat Yrondode's encyclopedic book on ingredients used in Hoodoo.

Magickal Formulary is the book I use most often,
By Mistress Shena (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magickal Formulary Book 1 (Paperback)
Everyone has an opinion on everything; but regarding witchcraft, spells, and rituals - no spell's ingredients or procedures is ever an exact science. This book brings together the true recipes of many, many spells from all different aspects of the witchcraft world and Wiccan religion. The magickal herbal store I buy my supplies from, recommended this book to me years ago - and since, it has become my favorite spellbook. I refer to this (and MAGICKAL FORMULARY BOOK II) on a daily basis - my copy has become ragtorn and stained - like any of my great cookbooks. Some of the spells and rituals assume some advanced knowledge of witchcraft, but there is almost always spells beginners can start with. A great reference book - I love it. |
