I've been fascinated with mermaids all my life. I have recently been trying to collect as many books as possible for my personal library. A couple of months ago, my obsession turned to mermaids. I ordered this book and another that mostly contained pictures.
If you're looking for facts on mermaids, mermen, and other types of merfolk (there are more than you think), this book is for you. This book contains several mermaid legends from around the world. It covers the different types of water folk, grouping them by the waters they inhabit: Rivers, Small Streams and Waterfalls, Desert and Arrid Regions (Who knew?), Swamps, Fens, and Wetlands, and finally Lakes. There is also a section of other kinds of water creatures, such as dolphins and hippocampus. In addition to these facts, there are sections on how to contact merfolk and use water magick. None of which I have tried yet but maybe someday. Even if you find that a little ridiculous, the book is worth it for the other information it supplies. There are illustrations, in black and white, most from Clipart. If you're looking for a book with mostly pictures of mermaids, I recommend Mermaids (Magical Beings) by Elizabeth Ratisseau.

For those interested in the mystical & magical side of Mermaids,
By
This review is from: Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures (Paperback)
Although there are a number of excellent books about Mermaids legends and art involving Mermaids from around the world and throughout history, I have not found that many publications about Mermaids from the mystical and magical points of view. D.J. Conway did a superior job in writing this book. Her suggested meditative techniques are easy to understand and work with. She breaks down the different types of sea beings into good and friendly ones, as well as identifying and cautioning the reader of potentially harmful sea beings and spirits. I personally do not know of any other author that fairly and specifically breaks this topic down. I do recommend this book!

A mermaid reference book for the easily pleased.,

Love research on folklore. And compilations of myth or legend.
But this struck me as the 'ultra-lite' version. This book is not outstanding or special in any way. Suggest readers (whether child or adult) get this from the library before they decide to spend any money for their own copy. Glad I did. There are plenty of other mermaid books that contain stunning art and text.

Misleading Title...,

This review is from: Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures (Kindle Edition)
I bought this book thinking that it would be a long book about old legends and facts about mermaids, however, i found that only a few chapters were about what the title referred to. most of the chapters where about religion and summoning mermaids and casting spells. it mentioned alters, using candles, herbs, stones, and salts. a great book if your looking for ocean connected beliefs, a less then decent book of mermaids

Great Book for Water Witches,

I've always been a fan of the ocean. It's one of my weaknesses. This book was very informative on many subjects from properties of water, legends of mermaids and other water fey, spells for water magick, and so much more. This was my first water magick styled book, but I've been working with the element of water for years. I'd have to say this book is on the must read for water witches and is great for beginners as well as advanced witches.

This review is from: Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures (Paperback)
D.J. Conway has worked in the fields of magick and Paganism for over forty years: her background lends to Magickal Mermaids And Water Creatures: Invoke The Magick Of The Waters: a collection of stories about the Mer-Folk which exist in nearly every water culture the world over. Ocean mermaids have influences on the weather and water alike: their secret powers and how to find and use them are revealed in a unique coverage not to be found elsewhere.

Love the author's presentation. It make you feel like you are one with the mermaids. I don't like to read much. But this book got me reading page by page.
I wish it has color illustration on the mermaids. The books discuss all aspect of mermaids and all kinds of merfolk and water creature.

Let's tell the truth, shall we?,
By Bored Girl (Charleston, SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures (Paperback)
I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend this book because of the author's political views. She clearly knows a lot about the subject and offers quite a bit of insight into the mermaids' powers, but completely ignores the fact that mermaids have been using their ability to control the weather to wreak havoc on humankind. For centuries, mermaids have unleashed floods and hurricanes on the unsuspecting human population in an ill-advised attempt to wipe us all out. Everyone knows that mermaids caused Katrina?!?!
If I wanted to read yet another screed by a mermaid apologist, I would have picked up a copy of A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids, by Margot Datz. How sad that so many otherwise excellent authors have been seduced into parroting the mermaids' agenda. Fellow humans beware--this author is nothing more than an empty-headed puppet for the mer-elite! |
