5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, Effective, Poor Documentation November 2, 2010
Verified Purchase
First and foremost, this is powerful and effective software. Once you get past a very few training issues that are not explained well in the documentation, it's easy and intuitive. I'll try to add a couple of screen captures to illustrate the power. I bought this software to clean up 20 cassette tapes that are 30 years old and decent, but noisy and it's done the job well after fits and starts understanding the software.

First, it isn't clear from the manual that changes don't show on the screen. So if you use the "denoiser" the changes show up as you listen to audio...in fact you can listen to the audio and try various changes on the fly, especially useful with the equalizer function. Again though the changes don't show up in the graphic on the screen. You have to save the project and reload it to "see" the changes. The second training issue is the use of objects; it isn't obvious from the manual how to "create" an object, which is a segment of the whole. So in the screen captures I hope to post, I created a few seconds of "object" where a speaker on the tape is speaking so softly he's barely audible. I wanted to raise the volume of only that section to match the rest of the tape. Creating an object is easy, but uses a scissors icon to establish boundaries rather than to "cut" or "delete" a section. Once you understand those elements, the balance of the manual makes sense.

There are "automatic" settings that are effective, but not as effective as making your own mods. So for example, you can sample a section of noise and use that as a removal baseling and that's been more effective for me than using the automatic settings.

You can easily mix music tracks from multiple sources, say pulling tracks from a CD and old tapes.

I'm very pleased with the product, but early on I was ready to chuck it due to the two basics listed above not being clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Version 11 November 5, 2010
By Elliott
Verified Purchase
I bought this product because my computer's OS is Vista, and even with a patch freely provided by Magix, I was unable to export MP3 files to my computer without first burning a CD and occasionally it would not print a CD label.

This program is much easier to use, and the automatic cleaning settings work MUCH better than Version 11, the older version that I have. It clears up record noise with very little tinkering, and the automatic mastering seems to work just as well.

The only complaint I have about this product is that the label printing part of the program is very confusing and I still don't have it working well.

The recordings I am describing above were first recorded in 1946-53.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, easy to understand, great value! September 13, 2010
Length: 0:40 Mins
I thought it would be useful to put up a quick demo of what Audio Cleaning Lab 16 (ACL) can do. If you watch (actually listen) to the accompanying video review you'll hear a quick recording I made using the microphone that is built into my Asus netbook. It's not bad... for a microphone that's built into a netbook. Following that are the results produced by ACL after about six mouse clicks where I took default settings for everything that pertains to fixing audio recordings. (It's easy to find those since everything is accompanied with very clear on-line help.) I didn't bother incorporating the information that is available from the online help or video tutorials. The purpose was to show what you can do with this software 60 seconds after installation.

Bottom line is right out of the box this program can do some pretty impressive things.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate September 20, 2010
Verified Purchase
I have used earlier versions of this software, and some improvements seem to have been made, but it is not as user friendly as I would like. It's fine as far as it goes, but it does have it's limitations. There are other programs out there like Audacity that can do the same thing as ACL and are gratis. That does not make this a bad choice, it just doesn't go as far as I would like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audio Cleaning Program report May 1, 2010
Verified Purchase
I am really impressed with the performance of this program. I have been recording records to cd for the past several weeks and have found the reproduction of highs and lows is just great. Although I don't do any minute changes in the process, getting great sounding cd's is automatic without having to manually making changes. The manual is pretty complete, and I certainly would recommend this program to anyone.
