2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Magformers
We got these because my son's preschool teacher recommended them, but then someone else bought him Magformers, which are waaay better. These tend to fall apart more easily and the big problem with them is hard to explain, but here goes: they are straight-edged with 90-degree corners, which (with the tendency to fall apart) makes it difficult to build more complex shapes,...

This Christmas we bought our second set of Magna-tiles. Their play value has lasted all year, and the expansion of the set was almost as exciting as the first set. My son is disabled, and these are great user-friendly toys with which any child can succeed. They've also survived the dog's inquisitive mouth. We personally like the clear colors, but were tempted to try the opaque tiles (with opening door/window). Last but not least, the tiles foster creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magna-Tiles Rock!!!, May 27, 2007

My kids first saw these at a friends house a few months ago. Their Mom told me that no matter who comes to visit or how bored the kids are, these always get played with. I love the endless design options and ended up buying the "100" playset along with 4 of the "32" piece playsets for my sons 7th birthday. My kids (also a daughter age 8) have made every structure imaginable and continue to find new, inventive ways to play with these. I love that they add their own ideas on with their Magnetix playsets as well. I can forsee that these will help them with geometry as hands-on models that they can replicate...the uses for learning go on and on...from someone who still has all of our original lego duplo playsets, I can see this lasting indefinitely! Highly recommend this item if and when you can find it. Worth the high price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Neat activity for a busy 4 year old!, June 7, 2007

The real critic is my granddaughter who likes the Magna-Tiles lots! This particular set teaches about color combining because the tiles are translucent. We're finding out that once she figures out a combination she'll try it in paint as she is "arting." Originally saw it in a school; it works equally well at home and does not require direct teaching or too much explaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great toy, Artifically inflated pricing, December 2, 2011

This is a wonderful toy. In late 2011, the big problem is that the company manufacturers in Thailand. Due to the recent flooding in Thailand, the company, Valtech, is entirely sold-out. Toy companies are completely taking advantage of virtually zero-supply and strong product demand to really mark-up the price. The company's own website lists the 32-piece clear set at $51.50, which is only 3 dollars more than the 32-piece non-clear set. the 100-piece clear set is listed on the company web site at $120 and the 100-piece non-clear set is listed at $110. By contrast, in December 2011, online toystores are selling the 100-pieces sets at up to $299 and the 32-piece sets at $100 or more. When you read comments on the toy being "over-priced," check the date of the review and consider what price the customer paid. The power of supply-and-demand.

Not only do I agree with the reviewers about how they, are fun for everyone easy to clean up and they have lasted 6x longer than any toy in the house. My mother(also a teacher) bought my kids the big set after playing with the 32 piece set at her house. I thought she was crazy spending all that money on a toy. They get played with every single day, my daughter just built herself a Bakugan Holder. They have been in my house 3 YEARS and have not had one break or crack or anything. My children have been playing with them from 2- 7.5YEARS OLD, and continue to do so. I think they have lasted longer than anything I have ever purchased for them. Clean up is kind of fun because the magnets allow them to be picked up with ease. I LOVE THESE THINGS I don't think my children will ever outgrow them, and I find them much more fun to build with than any other toy out there!!!!

This is one of the best toys you can buy; my son has been playing with them since he was 3 and he is now 11! Very durable, endless fun, great for imagination-3-dimensional thinking--independent play--math---but mostly just great fun. I enjoy playing with him almost as much he does. Have now bought at least half a dozen more over the years for nieces, nephews, & god-children (girls and boy love them alike). Loved by all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful toy, but overpriced, September 13, 2009

My 2-year-old son, my husband and I *love* playing with these. We play with them nearly every day. My son likes to build garages and tunnels and put his trains and cars in them. Since they do not lock together, it's easy to open the doors to put cars in and take them out.

I can see him learning about geometry and spatial relations with these when he's older... two right triangles make a square, six isosceles triangles make a hexagon, etc.

We received these as a gift. I, personally, would be hard pressed to pay $50 for this set of very simple plastic and magnet tiles, but they are such a good toy, I probably would anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a toss up as to who loves this toy most!, May 7, 2008

My son received this for his 2nd birthday a few months ago, because of his intrest in it at a local children's museum. All I can say is that I'm uncertain who loves it more, him or his parents! It certainly sparks creative thinking as we try to outdo each other in our creations! I didn't realize that I had it in MYSELF to be so creative. This toy just brings it out of you. I swear I find myself playing with it for long periods of time when I'm actually just supposed to be putting it away! It's quite peaceful actually! The mathmatical concepts it's already teaching my son make it priceless as well! He's learning spacial reasoning, critical thinking (will this structure hold if I...) as well as shapes, colors and creativity.

If you are like me, I faithfully read all the reviews before purchasing an item and went with others suggestions and purchased the clear tiles. Personally I like the clear tiles! The uses seem to be endless. I must add that although it is a large monetary investment, I feel it is wiser to purchase the set of 100 as 32 simply isn't enough. This toy will certainly span the ages, thus worth the investment.

These tend to fall apart more easily and the big problem with them is hard to explain, but here goes: they are straight-edged with 90-degree corners, which (with the tendency to fall apart) makes it difficult to build more complex shapes, like regular polyhedrons. The other day, my son and I made a regular icosohedron out of magformers and it even withstood a little tossing around, and that would never happen with these. Because of the shape, they fit together best at right angles to each other. I would skip these and get magformers instead.

Hello,

I'm a parent of a 2 year 5 month old girl. We introduced Magna Tiles to our kid right around her 2nd birthday. At first she was not super excited about it and tried to poke and fiddle around with the tiles for a bit but didn't develop a strong liking. We had to go on a vacation and wanted some less voluminous toys for her and ended up packing the tiles. The vacation gave us a great opportunity to show her how the tiles worked - what were the different shapes one could make, how we could build interesting 3-D structures and even integrate these tiles with her other play things (small dolls that can sit inside the structures she'd make). She quickly adopted it and spent a majority of our downtime during the vacation playing with the tiles. Once we were back home, Magna Tiles were her best toys.
There are a few key reasons that make this toy a fantastic toy for young ones:
1. Innovative use of magnets
2. Sturdiness
3. Ability to foster imagination
4. Superb learning in both recognizing shapes and making new shapes
5. Travel friendliness
6. Really easy to clean

These are on a slightly costlier side but one must consider the great value and longevity (2-3 yrs) that they provide when compared to other toys you are considering. We are planning to get her an additional 100 tile set as she seems to be ready for more and we will cut down on purchasing other toys to make this happen.

Hope the review was helpful for you!
