2.0 out of 5 stars Stutters playing disks, October 16, 2008
By
This review is from: Magnavox DP100MW8B Progressive scan DVD player (Electronics)
Well, I must disagree with reviewer "Alydes" who complains of buzzing in the audio. I respectfully suggest this chap check his audio cables because I see absolutely no evidence of such a problem. This is often times caused by a poor ground somewhere in the link of connections. No sound problems on my installation.

My gripe is this DVD player suffers from STUTTERS. I've only had this a few days and for the first hour or so, it played great. Picture quality exactly on par with my expensive Samsung DVD burner. Naturally, for $30, one does not get all the creature features that come with more expensive units, and it does not burn disks, but I knew all that before making the purchase. No complaint. But after a couple hours, and letting the unit just run to see what it does, I started noticing STUTTERS, in both video and audio.

Now, this is the same disk that had played flawlessly 15 minutes earlier. What on earth is going on here? I eject the first disk, try another. Just like with the other one, plays fine for a few minutes and then begins stuttering. Put the disk in the Samsung DVD burner to see if it stutters. NO STUTTERING. Thus it can't be the disk.

This is really a shame, because it's very small, light weight, cheap and has a nicely laid-out remote which uses AA batteries (goodness me, I hate those junkers with the AAA batteries). It's the perfect buy for a second DVD machine, but what good is it if the darned thing constantly stutters?

It has an S-Video output on the back, which is also a nice feature, and I certainly took advantage of this, making my connection using the S-Video port. Two different S-Video cables were tried. Same result.

Well, it's October. The house is not boiling hot anymore, so it can't be suffering from overheating. Thermostat on the wall showed 74 degrees at test time. S-Video hookup, properly grounded electrical outlets, battery backed up with TrippLite Internet Office 500, so what else could I do to make it work? Beats me. Somebody out there surely has one of these that does not stutter. I just wasn't lucky enough to get one.

Rats. That's the breaks I guess.

Caveat Emptor ... jw

Afterthough....

Don't forget, you cannot take DVD-RW or DVD+RW disks created in your computer and play them in this unit. It won't play -RW or +RW. If your computer can convert the -R, -RW, +R or +RW disk to DVD VIDEO, you'll be ok. You gotta FINALIZE your disk, made elsewhere, whereas the FINALIZATION step converts the format into DVD VIDEO, same format as those John Wayne, Henry Fonda movies you bring home from the video store. It only plays DVD VIDEO format. No exceptions. No rain checks.

5.0 out of 5 stars works fantastic for me, October 21, 2010

I can't even remember how long I've had this but it has to be around 2-3 years now. This works better than any other player I've owned & has never given me any grief. And my household gives this thing a workout! It gets used anywhere from 3-10 hours a day. I love the fact that it goes into standby mode if you have it paused for a long time, and then it shuts itself off if it goes for an even longer amount without any use. Sometimes it gets a tad noisy but nothing that is overbearing or that noticeable during playback. I'm totally happy with this purchase and would buy it again. If you can't afford a flashy expensive player or just don't want to spend the money, don't bother. This little guy is great :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A pack horse, not a show horse, July 23, 2010

Since our experience with DVD players is that they last about a year, we quit buying state of the art examples. This is our latest replacement and it's now in mid third year. It deserves multiple stars for that reason alone.

It takes up very little space and there are no bells and whistles, but it plays DVDs beautifully. The fast forward and reverse features work just fine for us and my only complaint is that the remote is not very intuitive. If I were designing a remote for a low end DVD player, I'd make very prominent pause, stop and menu buttons and leave off the stuff like Zoom and Angle that people who'd purchase this machine are not likely to use.

We've been very satisfied with this cheap and reliable little DVD player. When it dies, we'll replace it with the same model.
