5.0 out of 5 stars works fantastic for me
I can't even remember how long I've had this but it has to be around 2-3 years now. This works better than any other player I've owned & has never given me any grief. And my household gives this thing a workout! It gets used anywhere from 3-10 hours a day. I love the fact that it goes into standby mode if you have it paused for a long time, and then it shuts itself off if...

Well, I must disagree with reviewer "Alydes" who complains of buzzing in the audio. I respectfully suggest this chap check his audio cables because I see absolutely no evidence of such a problem. 2.0 out of 5 stars Stutters playing disks, October 16, 2008

Well, I must disagree with reviewer "Alydes" who complains of buzzing in the audio. I respectfully suggest this chap check his audio cables because I see absolutely no evidence of such a problem. This is often times caused by a poor ground somewhere in the link of connections. No sound problems on my installation.

My gripe is this DVD player suffers from STUTTERS. I've only had this a few days and for the first hour or so, it played great. Picture quality exactly on par with my expensive Samsung DVD burner. Naturally, for $30, one does not get all the creature features that come with more expensive units, and it does not burn disks, but I knew all that before making the purchase. No complaint. But after a couple hours, and letting the unit just run to see what it does, I started noticing STUTTERS, in both video and audio.

Now, this is the same disk that had played flawlessly 15 minutes earlier. What on earth is going on here? I eject the first disk, try another. Just like with the other one, plays fine for a few minutes and then begins stuttering. Put the disk in the Samsung DVD burner to see if it stutters. NO STUTTERING. Thus it can't be the disk.

This is really a shame, because it's very small, light weight, cheap and has a nicely laid-out remote which uses AA batteries (goodness me, I hate those junkers with the AAA batteries). It's the perfect buy for a second DVD machine, but what good is it if the darned thing constantly stutters?

It has an S-Video output on the back, which is also a nice feature, and I certainly took advantage of this, making my connection using the S-Video port. Two different S-Video cables were tried. Same result.

Well, it's October. The house is not boiling hot anymore, so it can't be suffering from overheating. Thermostat on the wall showed 74 degrees at test time. S-Video hookup, properly grounded electrical outlets, battery backed up with TrippLite Internet Office 500, so what else could I do to make it work? Beats me. Somebody out there surely has one of these that does not stutter. I just wasn't lucky enough to get one.

Rats. That's the breaks I guess.

Caveat Emptor ... jw

Afterthough....

Don't forget, you cannot take DVD-RW or DVD+RW disks created in your computer and play them in this unit. It won't play -RW or +RW. If your computer can convert the -R, -RW, +R or +RW disk to DVD VIDEO, you'll be ok. You gotta FINALIZE your disk, made elsewhere, whereas the FINALIZATION step converts the format into DVD VIDEO, same format as those John Wayne, Henry Fonda movies you bring home from the video store. It only plays DVD VIDEO format. No exceptions. No rain checks.

I can't even remember how long I've had this but it has to be around 2-3 years now. This works better than any other player I've owned & has never given me any grief. And my household gives this thing a workout! It gets used anywhere from 3-10 hours a day. I love the fact that it goes into standby mode if you have it paused for a long time, and then it shuts itself off if it goes for an even longer amount without any use. Sometimes it gets a tad noisy but nothing that is overbearing or that noticeable during playback. I'm totally happy with this purchase and would buy it again. If you can't afford a flashy expensive player or just don't want to spend the money, don't bother. This little guy is great :)

Since our experience with DVD players is that they last about a year, we quit buying state of the art examples. This is our latest replacement and it's now in mid third year. It deserves multiple stars for that reason alone.

It takes up very little space and there are no bells and whistles, but it plays DVDs beautifully. The fast forward and reverse features work just fine for us and my only complaint is that the remote is not very intuitive. If I were designing a remote for a low end DVD player, I'd make very prominent pause, stop and menu buttons and leave off the stuff like Zoom and Angle that people who'd purchase this machine are not likely to use.

We've been very satisfied with this cheap and reliable little DVD player. When it dies, we'll replace it with the same model.

4.0 out of 5 stars no problems here-, December 3, 2008

This dvd player replaced an older and much more expensive model that finally bit the dust. I was quite pleased to find that the price had dropped considerably since our last dvd player was purchased. My kids use this player almost daily, and we have had no problems with operation, sound quality, etc. The discs go in and they play just as they are supposed to! We often use this model while people run on a treadmill nearby, and we still have no issues with skipping. It's a heck of a bargain and very compact too. I am quite pleased with this product. I would give it five stars, but as we've only had it for a couple months, I award four stars for now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good knockaround/2nd bedroom player, February 2, 2010
This review is from: Magnavox DP100MW8B Progressive scan DVD player (Electronics)
I picked this up to have a player in my bedroom that I can use for a non-critical audio/video system, for leaving a music CD playing on repeat all night long, and watching movies late at night when I'm chilling in the bedroom. So far, it's played everything I've thrown at it: DVD's, DVD+R's, CD's, CD-R's, and an MP3 disc but with some slight audio weirdness on the MP3 disc - not sure what that was about. The only minor annoyance is that it takes several seconds for a disc to load but once it loads, it performs very well. As long as it holds up, it's well worth the price I paid, and the small size is really a great bonus.

Hooked this right up when it was received.
Works great and have had no problems at all with it since received.
Was skeptical because of the price but this little player has not let us down.
Definitely a good buy, would recommend to others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not meant to be the heart of your system, September 3, 2009
This review is from: Magnavox DP100MW8B Progressive scan DVD player (Electronics)
I don't understand reviewers who expect state of the art performance from a $30 DVD player. This is not meant to be the heart of your system. It's a bedroom, 2nd or 3rd string DVD player at best, and it handles that role just fine. Just fine, indeed.

This was our DVD player for the tiny TV upstairs. It was rarely used and bit the dust after just 6 months. For the short amount of time that it worked, it was a great bargain. Then it died. So it goes.

1.0 out of 5 stars They should have called this model the DSKIP100MW8B, November 30, 2010

I bought this DVD player to play DVDs, but I ended up using my Playstation 2 as a DVD player, and the Playstation 2 was a god compared to this piece of junk. It was like comparing Michael Jordan to Jud Bucheler, or Robert Deniro to Kato Kaelin.

You may have a brand new DVD without a single scratch, yet this machine CANNOT play the entire DVD movie without getting to a point where it starts skipping and freezing up. Most of the time, around the middle of the movie, it eventually freezes completely and you have to eject the movie. It seems to have difficulties transitioning from DVD chapter to DVD chapter without freezing.

To be honest, I am a little shocked that Magnavox even put this machine out on the market. I have a netflix account, and I have tried to play several movies through it. Not a single one could reach its endpoint without freezing up and skipping. What really did it for me was when I took a brand new DVD right out of the box and it froze up about half way through the movie.

Perhaps this DVD player should be sold in novelty stores a practical joke, right next to the exploding cigars and whoopie cushions. Maybe that was its original intention and a mishap at Magnavox resulted it being billed as an actual DVD player.

I BOUGHT THIS DVD Player from an amazon seller. first ofallit wasn't in the original box as i thought it would be, then i saw i came with no extra attatchments such as the jacks to connect in to the t.v. Then to top it off after i had everything connected and set up, the DVD Player didn't work at all. it shows the bluedvd screen but will not load or work to save someones life. i do not reccomend this seller to any buyer.
