3.0 out of 5 stars Great, but upconversion is horrible
I like everything about this DVD player but the upcoversion. I agree with the other reviewers on all the other "pros". I have a Blu-Ray player and a High def TV. Obviously, any upconverted DVD will never compare to a Blu-Ray movie, but the upconversion on this DVD player looks a thousand times worse than the upconversion on my friend's Playstation 3. If it looked as good...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Product with Great Factory Service, December 18, 2009

This review is from: Magnavox DP170MW8B 1080P Upconversion DVD Player (Electronics)
I purchased this DVD player for my living room a few weeks ago. I noticed a rattle noise from the remote control before I was able to install the batteries. Sure enough, the remote did not work. I contacted Magnavox and found that they have the best customer service I have encountered in a very long time. Everyone was helpful and quick to correct my concern. Within a week, I had my new remote (free of charge) and was able to watch movies. The DVD player itself works wonderfully and has a very sharp picture using either the RCA inputs or HDMI input (cable not included but available on Amazon for less than five dollars) and the upconversion. For the price I cannot imagine a better player.

If it looked as good as the PS3, I would be thrilled. There is little to no difference in the resolution between the settings 480P, 720P, or 1080P. All in all, this player isn't bad, especially for the price. It's ridiculously inexpensive, but if you're looking for something exclusively for the upconversion feature, as I was, I recommend spending a bit more for one that will really upconvert. If I had bought it in a store, I would have returned it. But for the price, it wasn't worth the hassel sending it back to Amazon.

This DVD player is a replacement for a Sony DVD player, and I'm much more pleased with this one. It has all the qualities I need and it's very reasonably priced. I like that it has button controls on the front since I use this in my shop and have to hit play and stop frequently.

I have a old TV so I use the RCA cables included and the picture is great. I don't know how this plays on HD TV. But so far so good. I just got it so I don't know how it will be over time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheapest on the market, and works just fine., March 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Magnavox DP170MW8B 1080P Upconversion DVD Player (Electronics)
When I purchased this DVD player (Feb 2010), it was the cheapest DVD player available on Amazon at $35. (It seems prices are going up; my last DVD player cost less.) So far, it's been working like a charm. It's completely plug-and-play. I plugged it in using the cables that came with it, and the remote control also came with batteries. Unlike the last super-cheap DVD player I purchased, I've noticed no quality problems with this one so far. The sound and picture line up perfectly as far as I can tell. The picture and sound quality are fine, though I believe that's a function of the TV, not the DVD player. My only complaints are with the remote control. First, it doesn't seem to be very powerful. I have to be careful to point the remote directly at the DVD player or it doesn't work. In addition, it's a generic remote, and most of the buttons on it are not relevant to a DVD player. As a result, I have to hunt around for the DVD-specific buttons. My only other complaint is that the DVD player doesn't appear to fast-forward faster than 5x. At least, for the fastest fast-forward speed, it says "5x" on the screen.

However, overall, for $35 it's a perfectly good deal.

The upconverted picture is amazing, especially for the price. Don't forget to buy an HDMI cable when you buy this (because they are about 3-5 times as expensive at your local electronics or the like) - I like the Amazon Basics one. I Don't like that you can't change setup with movie on screen - only when stopped. Remote is poorly designed, but I use a universal remote so it doesn't really matter.

I bought a basic SONY for the bedroom. It did not have S-Video or HDMI 'ports.' For a few bucks more, you can get a fine basic DVD player with HDMI upconversion.

I do not have a home theater. I do not own Blu Ray discs (I think one of my new laptops can handle them). So this works very well with my 32 inch SONY LCD TV. One HDMI cable instead of all those stupid old style jacks.

Obviously if you have a more sophisticated system, you're not going to like this player. If you are looking for a nice one for the in-law suite/guest room in your home, this fits the bill.

What a bargain! I hooked this thing up to a 46" 1080p LCD television, and have so far watched DVD's in both widescreen and letterbox format. I would not have believed how well this player upcoverts if I had not seen it with my own eyes. I won't go so far as to say it's just as clear as BluRay, but it is really close, even sitting eight feet in front of a 46" 1080p screen. Sure, it's not quite BluRay, but it means that my DVD collection is not obsolete after all, as I feared it would be. In fact, I have actually started buying DVD's again, instead of paying more for BluRay's, because I know now that I can watch them on this player, and lose very little video quality.

Just remember that you must use an HDMI cable to get the best picture, and make sure that your TV is receiving a 1080p signal from the player. (Or 720p if your television is only 720p)

If there is one complaint, it is that the movie you are watching will not automatically start where you left off when you ejected the disc. I have owned much lesser, and older, DVD players which do that very well, and I don't understand why they left such a basic feature off of this otherwise amazing player? (But then again, the PS3 doesn't do it either with BluRay's!? Go figure!) Yes, this forces you to fast forward, or chapter skip, to get to the point where you left off in the movie when you re-insert the disc, but it's a small price to pay for such a quality picture. I still recommend this DVD player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Product For The Price., July 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Magnavox DP170MW8B 1080P Upconversion DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought one of these after purchasing my first HD TV. My regular 10 year old Hitachi DVD player just looked horrible on it so I took a suggestion from my friend and set out to find a good deal on an upconverting one. I had never purchased a Magnavox product prior to this one and for the price I really didn't know what to expect but I thought for the price I had to try it out. The set up is easy and I immediately noticed a drastic difference. The upconversion on this thing looks fantastic on my 46 Inch Panasonic Viera. It's almost as clear as HD content from cable HD channels. Almost, which is what you should expect, it obviously can never be full HD since the data is not on the disc to make it full hd. Those saying the upconversion sucks are clearly expecting too much, this isn't a blue ray player. All in all this can't be beat for the price and I'll definitely keep Magnavox in mind for future purchases.
