I can't say that "I like it" (4 stars) or "I love it" (5 stars) but this made in China, refurbished Blu-ray player met my expectations which explains the solid 3 stars, meaning "It's Okay".

As a player, this is an inexpensive, basic, no frills unit that does the job I expected it to do and not a lot more - play Blu-ray, DVDs and audio CDs in the bedroom. Nothing more than simple playback should be expected from it but, so far, it has played everything without a glitch. The picture is steady and crisp and so is the audio. There was no skipping so far and old DVDs that became unplayable on the DVD player that it's replacing can be watched again and play flawlessly.

First, for what the player lacks: Internet access. There is no Ethernet port and there is no WiFi - therefore there will never be Netflix or Pandora streaming or anything that needs a network connection. In addition there is no easy way to upgrade it or, if it's upgradeable, the capability is not documented in the manual.

On the positive side, besides the basic playback, this model does a pretty good job upscaling DVDs and has an SD slot - it supports SD, (miniSD and microSD will need an adapter) and SDHC and it does NOT support miniSDHC or microSDHC cards. You should be able to display JPEG pictures. Another welcome feature is its going into standby mode if no action is taken for a few minutes while displaying the 'menu'.

Available ports include HDMI Out, Audio Out, Component Video Out, Digital Out (coax) and Video Out.

The player came with a small and easy to use remote control (batteries included), a 50-page manual and an RCA component video cable.

I have no complaints about this model. It is, by design, an inexpensive, basic features Blu-ray player.

I understand there are a wide variety of opinions as to what people like in a good blu-ray player, and I've tried a few models, so I can understand both sides of the argument.

First of all when I upgraded to blu-ray in 2009, I wasn't looking for tons of bells and whistles, rather Just the movie in HD. If you've lived through the format wars HD DVD was just a player, with the ability to upgrade firmware over the internet. With blu-ray it started out as just a player, without having to worry about things like BD Live, internet streaming, etc. I've tried a couple profile 2.0 players with these features, and see disadvantages and advantages to each. Mainly my gripe with 2.0 players has been that, I don't use BDLive, and BDLive can often cause compatibility issues with disc playback, and depending on the player can cause a royal pain if you want the player connected to the network, but BDLive disabled. With this magnavox, it's a profile 1.1 player, no internet to worry about, no BDLive, yes, it means a disc is required to flash new firmware, but that's not a big deal. What I have found though, is when comparing this player with my 2.0 players is, New releases don't suffer the problems they do on this player, compared to what random issues can occur on a 2.0 player.

For example, I've had random discs, and features of discs, break on my 2.0 players. With this magnavox, it's rock solid without a flinch. True, it's a tad slower then you most current player, but, as a professional, I take stability over speed, It's nice if you can have speed, and stability together, but I haven't found that in blu-ray, even at it's current age. For someone who just wants a player, few hassles, and peace of mind that you're movies will play, I would strongly recommend this player.

I bought this player as an additional player for our family room (the smaller of our two viewing spaces with my "back-up" older surround package). I wanted an inexpensive player for this setting and the Magnavox filled the bill nicely. I had purchased this same player for my father for Christmas back when it first came out and he's been very satisfied with it's picture and sound quality. After using this refurb unit for awhile, I am also very satisfied with the picture and sound quality. It does a nice job of upconversion on our DVD's as well. The price could not be beat and the unit looks brand new.

I would have given it 5 stars, but without BD-live capability or any of the other streaming/wi-fi features a lot of the other players are sporting today, it gets only a 4. If you want basic to just get the job done with no frills, this is a great player for that situation. If you want some of the higher end features or a unit for your main viewing/home theater area, look elsewhere.

Been using this DVD player for about 6 months now, I originally picked it up in June when they had them on sale at Wal-mart for $78. Its been a great player and has played every DVD and Bluray I have thrown at it. It lacks alot of the advanced features of more expensive units, but it does what it was built to do. Play discs.

There are players that are faster... there are players that have more options... there are players that cost a lot more but... if you want a great basic Blu-ray player you can NOT beat this unit.

I purchased three of them as family xmas gifts two years ago and they all are still working perfectly and play everything my family throws at them.

Just upgraded firmware tonight to keep pace with the latest Blu-Ray standards, (use the units manual for instructions not the generic upgrade instructions on the Magnavox site) which went off without a hitch. The fact that Magnavox is still standing behind this unit is better than some companies that obsolete/kill models as fast as the Sci Fi channel cancels my favorite programs :(

Great picture, great sound, GREAT PRICE and... they keep working. -SilverFoxDan
