A Great Guide to an Overlooked Cause of Migraine, October 12, 2004
Migraine sufferers have to put up not only with the pain of their headache, but also with the inability of conventional medicine to do much about it. Drugs are potent, only work patchily and have nasty side effects.
This useful little book looks at one probable underlying migraine cause -- magnesium deficiency. Dr Cohen describes how up to 75% of Americans are deficient in this mineral and as a consequence are sick in many ways. Doctors are widely ignorant about magnesium and, in the pharma-culture that predominates, think of drugs as first resort rather than last.
Dr Cohen reviews many of the lifestyle factors that seem to provoke migraines, many of which deplete the body's magnesium stores.
Prudently, he does not claim that correcting the magnesium deficiency will cure all migraine headaches. However, he provides impressive evidence (evidence that your doctor will respect) that a high percentage of patients will get relief.
This eminently readable book has guidance on the types of magnesium available and how to find the right dose for you.
Of course, from the anthropological point of view, humans were not designed to have migraines or take supplements. As a nutritional anthropologist and author Deadly Harvest, I would prefer people to restructure their lives, notably eating habits, so that migraines disappear. Having said that, for those migraine sufferers who cannot manage the complete program, the insights in this book could transform their lives.

Magnesium can relieve migraines and many other ailments, please read below, July 17, 2005
Dr. Cohen's book does the public a great service in discussing the importance of magnesium for relieving migraines. However, as Dr. Carolyn Dean discusses in her very important book The Miracle of Magnesium, magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the major factor -- in many other severe illnesses including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, diabetes, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problems. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and many are severely deficient. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked by orthodox medical doctors, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation. While I recommend Dr. Cohen's book, I recommend even more highly Dr. Dean's more comprehensive (but easy to read) book The Miracle of Magnesium. Getting the right level of magnesium can not only mitigate a large number of seemingly-unrelated ailments, it may save your life.

Thank you, Dr. Cohen, September 3, 2007
I have been a chronic daily headache sufferer for 6 years. The first breakthrough for me was reading Dr. Buchholtz's book Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain. It helped me identify my triggers, it helped more than all the neurologists, alternative doctors and chiropractors combined, but I still had a headache about 15 days out of the month. Then I read Dr. Cohen's book and started taking 800mg of magnesium and this seems to be the last piece of the puzzle for me. I haven't had a headache since starting it a month ago, which hasn't happened in 6 years.
Another interesting thing, I started giving my 12 year old son magnesium too and the facial tic that he has had for years stopped. The neurologist had given him an MRI and said his brain was fine, but he had Tourettes syndrome and would need medication when the tics became too pronounced. I looked into the "dopamine inhibitors" that they were going to give him and they were pretty scary big time drugs. I'm so grateful that we won't need to put him on these drugs now. It's amazing how little doctors know about magnesium deficiencies.
My whole family is now taking magnesium, and we all feel better in different ways. Thank you, Dr. Cohen!
Good Luck to all you headache sufferers, I hope this is your answer too.
