I tried following the directions in this book. He provides quite a lot of research for his findings (reads more like a medical study than a book) and lots of options for different types of magnesium to try. I ended up using the one that he uses (magnesium chelate with ammino acids) as this didn't upset my stomach as much as the others, but now I have a bunch of bottles...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to an Overlooked Cause of Migraine, October 12, 2004
This review is from: The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Headaches (Paperback)
Migraine sufferers have to put up not only with the pain of their headache, but also with the inability of conventional medicine to do much about it. Drugs are potent, only work patchily and have nasty side effects.

This useful little book looks at one probable underlying migraine cause -- magnesium deficiency. Dr Cohen describes how up to 75% of Americans are deficient in this mineral and as a consequence are sick in many ways. Doctors are widely ignorant about magnesium and, in the pharma-culture that predominates, think of drugs as first resort rather than last.

Dr Cohen reviews many of the lifestyle factors that seem to provoke migraines, many of which deplete the body's magnesium stores.

Prudently, he does not claim that correcting the magnesium deficiency will cure all migraine headaches. However, he provides impressive evidence (evidence that your doctor will respect) that a high percentage of patients will get relief.
This eminently readable book has guidance on the types of magnesium available and how to find the right dose for you.

Of course, from the anthropological point of view, humans were not designed to have migraines or take supplements. As a nutritional anthropologist and author Deadly Harvest, I would prefer people to restructure their lives, notably eating habits, so that migraines disappear. Having said that, for those migraine sufferers who cannot manage the complete program, the insights in this book could transform their lives.

Dr. Cohen's book does the public a great service in discussing the importance of magnesium for relieving migraines. However, as Dr. Carolyn Dean discusses in her very important book The Miracle of Magnesium, magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the major factor -- in many other severe illnesses including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, diabetes, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problems. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and many are severely deficient. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked by orthodox medical doctors, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation. While I recommend Dr. Cohen's book, I recommend even more highly Dr. Dean's more comprehensive (but easy to read) book The Miracle of Magnesium. Getting the right level of magnesium can not only mitigate a large number of seemingly-unrelated ailments, it may save your life.

I have been a chronic daily headache sufferer for 6 years. The first breakthrough for me was reading Dr. Buchholtz's book Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain. It helped me identify my triggers, it helped more than all the neurologists, alternative doctors and chiropractors combined, but I still had a headache about 15 days out of the month. Then I read Dr. Cohen's book and started taking 800mg of magnesium and this seems to be the last piece of the puzzle for me. I haven't had a headache since starting it a month ago, which hasn't happened in 6 years.

Another interesting thing, I started giving my 12 year old son magnesium too and the facial tic that he has had for years stopped. The neurologist had given him an MRI and said his brain was fine, but he had Tourettes syndrome and would need medication when the tics became too pronounced. I looked into the "dopamine inhibitors" that they were going to give him and they were pretty scary big time drugs. I'm so grateful that we won't need to put him on these drugs now. It's amazing how little doctors know about magnesium deficiencies.

My whole family is now taking magnesium, and we all feel better in different ways. Thank you, Dr. Cohen!

Good Luck to all you headache sufferers, I hope this is your answer too.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST NATURAL AND SAFE TREATMENT EVER! A 10 STAR BOOK!, August 22, 2007

This review is from: The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Headaches (Paperback)
THIS BOOK HAS GIVEN ME MY LIFE BACK! Before I read this book and tried the natural and easy treatment, I had migraine headaches and shoulder problems 5 out of 7 days of the week. In fact, I rarely had a day that I did not suffer from headaches and this went on for over 30 years! Since I have read this book and followed the easy to follow treatment program in it, my headaches are now fewer and fewer and milder and milder. Before this book and following it, I had to go to bed in a dark room when I had a severe headache and could not do anything but rest for days at a time. Now, I have my life back! And I truly believe that in time, continuing to follow this program, I will be pain free just about everyday. This is a very easy to follow book and it really works! If you have problems with migraines or any type of headache or even shoulder pain etc, I suggest you buy this book. It could be the best money that you ever spent on yourself. For me, the money that I spent on this book is worth every penny! Note that while I was reading this book, I also went on to research how stress is a MAJOR FACTOR with people who experience headaches and other types of pain and I have learned that STRESS is a MAJOR factor in most people with headaches, especially migraine headaches. Magnesium has not only prevented more headaches in my situation, I am now much more relaxed and do not have the shoulder and muscle aches or the migraines now.

5.0 out of 5 stars headache free- finally!, February 16, 2008

I can't recommend this book highly enough...It has changed my life. My family and friends have never seen me go a month without a headache....I am so happy, and it's like an entirely new life.

If you've tried magnesium before (like I did) but it didn't work for you, you may not have understood how much you need to take and why. Once I read this book, I made connections between a whole slew of problems/triggers.

I used to take Imitrex at least twice a week. I haven't taken one in a MONTH. I had two small headaches that asprin killed....and I also worked out heavily and did a few other things that usually bring on migraines.

Not one yet.

I expect to still get a few, but honestly I can say I am just beginning to see what I've been missing all of these years.

Please, please try this book. I do not know the author in any way. I just hate to think of anyone suffering needlessly after the relief I've achieved so far.

In order to give full disclosure, I ordered another book with the migraine diet in it at same time. I had been on that diet before, but not understood how tracking the foods worked. Two weeks after starting the magnesium supplements, I started the diet as well. I am off Diet Coke and all MSG. However, I had migraines when I was a kid, long before I ate or drank that kind of junk. I think all of this (mg and diet) helps to significantly improve the migraine threshold.

When I feel a headache coming on, I've taken the magnesium as he suggested and it has vanished.

Thank you for this book! It is the best money I've ever spent.

Easy to read and easy to understand. I have already followed the directions and have stopped having migraines. I have been battling them for 20 years. The book should be a must read for anyone with migraine headaches. Magnesium is a lot cheaper than most medicines and all doctors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Try magnesium, November 5, 2008
This review is from: The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Headaches (Paperback)
For anyone that needlessly suffers from migraines and has not already tried magnesium, you need to try it RIGHT AWAY. This book proves how important it is.

I've suffered with migraines (every week and sometimes daily) for the past 5 years taking pointless medications from doctors (topamax, nortriptylene) , which did not work at all. After starting to supplement with magnesium I started noticing a great improvement in the frequency and severity of my migraines and my overall well being. After taking magnesium for only two weeks, my headaches arn't comletely gone yet, but have been greatly reduced so far. I'm BLOWN AWAY that the doctors i've seen havn't ONCE suggested that I try magnesium or other natural methods that actually work. It's completely ridiculous and not very far from a crime, in my opinion.

In my quest to relieve my own migraines ive learned a lot about possible causes of migraine headaches.
Some considerations:
- Try sleeping with your head elevated at a 30 degree angle. A 12 inch foam wedge does this the best. This has helped me... read this book for more info -

-Eliminate all MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and other exitotoxins from diet
-Some headaches are caused psychologically, try this site -http://www.psychresearch.com/headache1.html
-Biofeedback - stress can be a big trigger for chronic headaches
-Drink more water

This is just what has helped me, I can't guarantee my suggestions will work for you but they are well worth a try. If you get migraine headaches I recommend you try solving the problem through natural methods (like i've mentioned) before you start taking preventive medicine or have surgery. Remember: If drug companies cured people they would be out of business.

Bottomline: Try Magnesium (anything but oxide), and other natural methods

This book is short and to the point; very informative and makes sense. It seems apparent the author is well versed in the subject of migraines from a personal as well as a professional point of view. Recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, November 30, 2007
This review is from: The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Headaches (Paperback)
This book makes a lot of sense and opened my eyes to Magnesium as help for migraines. I have been taking Migrelief for a while now (it did help reduce the number of migraines for me) but thought the key benefit in it comes from Feverfew. Having read this book, I realized it may be magnesium that is really helping. I started taking Migrelief more regularly and supplementing with additional magnesium on high trigger days (e.g. rainy) and I am experiencing improvement.
I don't know if magnesium alone is a solution (I am also following diet and other recommendations from the "Heal your headache: 1-2-3 program" book), but I think it is worth trying and the book offers some good info.
