Book Description

July 16, 2007 0470069783 978-0470069783 1
The book is a technical guide for chemists and spectroscopists, and presents a concise description of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and how it has advanced the interpretation of molecular electronic spectra.
  • Provides a practical guide to utilizing MCD spectroscopy for chemists starting in the field
  • Written by an expert with over twenty years of experience in the field
  • Helps the reader to visualize the optical spectroscopic effects presented by MCD measurements
  • Includes practical considerations for experimental MCD measurements based on the author's experience
  • Written as a general discussion of the subject matter, with illustrative examples provided and discussed in the case studies to show the breadth of application of MCD measurements.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book provides an excellent practical guide for using MCD spectroscopy. The author successfully highlights the important features of chiroptical properties that are associated with the presence of a strong magnetic field … This book is highly recommended not only for those scientists who plan to actively study MCD spectroscopy in the near future, but also for scientists who wish to develop a deeper and more complete understanding of the field of optical spectroscopy." (Chirality, June 2008)

From the Back Cover

A practical guide for using and fully leveraging MCD spectroscopy

This text introduces you to magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and its use in the interpretation of molecular electronic spectra. The presentation enables you to clearly understand and visualize the optical spectroscopic effects presented by MCD measurements. In addition, the author highlights the added insights that experimental MCD spectra add to traditional absorption spectroscopy.

Following an introductory chapter, the text explores:

  • Polarized light

  • Theoretical framework and definition of MCD terms

  • Measurement of MCD spectra

  • Interpretation of MCD spectra

The author, with more than thirty years of experience in MCD spectroscopy, offers many practical considerations for experimental MCD measurements based on firsthand experience. Two chapters present more than forty selected case studies, including both diamagnetic and paramagnetic examples, which are presented in order to demonstrate the many uses of MCD measurements for the interpretation of electronic spectra in the vis-UV region and the formulation of electronic structure models.

Following the case examples is a chapter on vibrational and rotation-vibrational MCD in the IR and near IR region (MVCD) and MCD in the X-ray region (XMCD). The final chapter introduces magnetic linear dichroism (MLD) spectroscopy, an important related and complementary magneto-optical technique.

Focusing on how to use and fully leverage MCD spectroscopy, this text is recommended for all scientists who wish to understand this area of spectroscopy. The book's many case examples also make it ideal for graduate students studying spectroscopy, organometallic chemistry, nanotechnology, and bioinorganic chemistry.
