2006 release from the Irish singer/songwriter and former member of Snow Patrol and Reindeer Section. He was awarded an Ivor Novello Award in 2005 as part of the songwriting team behind Snow Patrol's Final Straw album. His solo work is not world's away from Snow Patrol, although it remains something entirely different from what fans of the band expect. Instead of resting on his laurels, Archer is consistently working on his songwriting skills and creating music that is both mature and more direct. Mojo Magazine says 'Upbeat indie pop gems, evocative, windswept, romantic.. . Iain Archer's album "Magnetic North" is among my top 5 of the 2006. It's for those who long for layered, complex finger-picking structures matched with sweet melodic lyrical arrangements. If you like Wilco, Jeff Buckley, Guillemots, or Bright Eyes this is an album for you. It rocks when it needs to: "When It Kicks In." "Canal Song (End of Sentence)" makes me imagine I could breath underwater. "Long Jump" is the best song on the album. "Luke's Point" is an acoustic gem. "Magnetic North" is a rare treat where every song takes to a new place, and somehow it remains cohesive. Songwriting at it's best.

This is a good cd. The melodies are picked out beautifully and Iain Archer has a distinctive voice and thoughtful lyrics. Canal Song is truly breathtaking.
