Product Description

Amazon.com

We've yet to meet a child who doesn't love to play with words. Hearing-impaired children do it by signing, and babies repeat noises over and over, delighting in the patterns of sounds. It's a marvel to witness a child start to associate sounds with letters and then words, and great fun to watch him or her throw words together in a heap and see what comes out. The Really Big Words set will provide years of fascinating verbal learning, from the most basic sound-equals-letter level to the more sophisticated process of composing a poem or story. The letters and words (128 in all) are oversize, perfect for preschoolers and kindergartners. The set also comes with blank strips and a pencil and stencil set for the inspired to create new words of their own. --Sandy Hirsch

I bought this for my son with Aspergers. He can read and he can write, but he has a problem getting the words from his mind onto paper. He took to this instantly. An added bonus, being able to see his words, he's correcting his own speech! The only problem I have is that it's missing simple words like "did". I was happy to see that it came with "n't" and "es", so you could add onto words. But my son is so funny about things, he refuses just to place a homemade word sign into the sentence. Instead, he will totally change his sentence. That is the ONLY problem I've had with the set. However, I have to give the company credit. They probably never figured on their product being used in this way. IT IS AN AMAZING TOOL FOR MY SON!!! And for that, I am completely satisfied. Now if they will create an 'additional words' kit, life would be perfect. ;o)

The size of these are excellent. Large enough to read and handle. So much fun for little ones. My daughter (kindergarten) loves to make up sentences with these. She's even trying to teach my younger daughter to read with them. We opted for magnetic poetry over the dry erase markers for our playroom. Much safer and cleaner.

As a former kindergarten/ first grade teacher, these would be great in the classroom. One box of these and a small magnetic board equals a great independent center!

I've now placed an order for and returned this product twice. I expected to receive the (newer?) version of this product pictured on Amazon's website, with the lunchbox-style packaging with the handle, and "over 100 words." What I've received twice now is what I think is the older version of this product, without the same packaging, and with "over 80 words." I ordered this product specifically because of the list of words that a previous reviewer so kindly typed out, as that last has all the sight words my 4 year old is learning in school. The product I keep receiving is missing a few of those critical words, thus I keep having to return it. So if you would like to receive the newer version of the product, beware of the packaging of the item you receive. I'd like Amazon's third-party sellers to be more vigilant about what they're sending customers vs. what's pictured and described on Amazon's website.

I ordered the really big words in combination with a couple other sets (poetry and beginning sight words I believe) with the intention of putting them all on the fridge for my little girl to practice "writing" with. Yeah, its not going to work! At least not on one side of the fridge... These are HUGE. The word "flower" for instance is longer than my entire hand. Just a three letter word is longer than one of my fingers - And I have really big hands!
That said, well, at least I can put these on one side of the fridge and it hides the cat/dog/kid noseprints :D And I can clearly read them from the next room...

They are a lot of fun though and the little case they came in is perfect for keeping hair doodads in.

My only real complaint is that a lot of the words are curled on the ends. Particularly some short words like "saw" and some of the suffixes like "ed" or "ing" have the edges curled up so much that they will not lay flat on the fridge at all. I'm sure if I lay them inside a book for a couple of days they'll flatten out though.

The big word magnets have great word selection, excellent large scale size, much more attractive on fridge then the coloured alphabet. My 4 year old daughter loves it and the metal case they came in has been a hit.

The product description is for the NEW version with over 100 tiles. The first time I placed my order they shipped me the OLD version with 80 tiles. I had to talk to an Amazon agent to return this, it wasn't the normal quick online return procedure but not a big deal. The person who helped me suggested I replace the order after returning it with a different fulfillment business. I did so... 2nd order, also wrong. Grumble.

The one star isn't reflective of the product but rather, Amazon's supply chain on this particular item. I know when I search for stuff I often check the extremes in terms of ratings so... just make sure you double check which version you get.

Amazon to their credit has taken care of the returns quite well... I'm giving them one more chance here on this particular order. Third time's a charm?

12/23 update - 3rd time is NOT a charm. For starters it was supposed to be shipping next day air and delivered on 12/20. I received it on 12/23. Again... WRONG VERSION.

***BOTTOM LINE*** - If you want the ***100+ Tile Version*** DO NOT ORDER THIS FROM AMAZON. If you're okay with the 80 tile version, you're good to go. Fortunately this isn't the end of the world but I'm disappointed that Amazon hasn't sorted this out.
