I would direct you to the following publication from the US Department of Energy study into the efficacy and savings using magnetic and electromagnetic/electrostatic non-chemical water softening for scale control (in boilers, etc.):
The technology starts on page 5 (of the publication not the .pdf file), and then skip to page 17 where the Federal sites are listed where they are installed like GSA, NASA, Coast Guard, Air Force Bases, US Army Corps of Engineers, etc., and Non-Federal sites like Chrysler, Ford, GE, GM, many large steel manufacturing plants, etc..
Yes, the calcium and magnesium ions are not removed (EC/TDS meters will still read them), but the magnetic redirection of the polarity of the suspended ions causes them to combine more readily at low temperatures with suspended nitrates and sulfates. For example the magnetic field causes calcium ions to precipitate out as Aragonite (non-sticky, smaller grained, softer-scale deposits), rather than Calcite (an adherent mineral that readily forms a tough scale, especially on heating elements).
Caveats: don't install them near high power lines or other strong magnetic fields, make sure there is no electrical current flowing through the pipe (used as a ground), iron in the water decreases effectiveness, as does silica, too slow a flow rate (below 7 ft/sec), or too small a size for your application. I have not bought one yet, but I'm researching (obviously) and the relative cost, salt use and the 25 gallons/day of waste water for backflushing the chemical water softeners can't be justified in a drought plagued place like San Diego. I'm already building a solar still to reclaim the back flush from the Reverse Osmosis system for the drinking/cooking/hydroponics use.
it has been aout a month and i feel it is working, the darkness doesn't build up on my sink now that i can tell, and my skin is softer. i had started applying apple cider vinegar and water after my shower prior to getting the magnets and that helped some but even when i don't do that now, i am feeling much better, my skin is softer. the instructions have warnings about the power of the magnets might pinch fingers if not handled right . but i got the small set and they are not strong enough to harm fingers. but do seem to work well. the only other option i found was a $2,000.00. electronic model without the use of salt as well. i'm glad i got these.
Good business idea though, wish I had thought of it and the good hting about those red plates is that they prevent the magnets from crashing into each other and chipping. That happens a lot with neodymium magnets, take it from someone who has experience. Also, don't let your kids eat these magnets, else they will be a pain in the butt to take out. LOL.
