4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad.
I got this for my birthday because I like Magnetix. The inside was nice. The balls were cyrstal clear. I rated this as 4 stars because you have quite a high chance of losing your balls. When my sister got a set. She lost one ball. All my magnetix sets, I haven't lost a single ball.

When we first got the Magnetix extender set my children loved them. Then after a couple of months of building, the magnetics starting coming out of the extenders, rendering the set unusable. I tried to super glue them back in with no luck. In my opinion, Magnetix are a bit on the pricey but I didnt mind paying the extra especially since my kids loved them and played with them often. However, they are definitely not worth the money when they fall apart.

We also have the regular Magnetix set and we havent had a problem with the magnetics coming out of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars great idea but loose magnets, October 21, 2005

I bought this for my son's birthday, knowing he will love it. I already plan to get different sets. Before I made the purchase I read the review that said the magnets in the extender set came loose - and bought anyway. Well, I took everything out (35 balls, 25 rods) and tested them right away. 7 of the 25 rods lost magnets on the first pull! I superglued them back in but we will have to wait and see if it lasts. I can say the magnets are soooo strong they have a great pull on each other and the little magnet just slides right out of the bar.
ONE YEAR LATER UPDATE - the kids still love them (3 or 4 sets now) - and we still lose magents everytime we play with them. The kids know to put the aside to be reglued! Very important toy to my children and easy to store (in a metal coffee can with lid).

All Magnetix products were recalled yesterday. This item should be taken off the site. The problem is that the magnetic force of the tiny magnets is generally stronger than the glue that holds them into the rods. One toddler near Seattle found two of them lying around and ate them -- the two magnets attracted to each other across different bends in his intestine, blocking his digestive tract and killing him.

Our son received a set of Magnetix as a birthday gift, and thankfully hasn't started using them yet. His geo-mags do not appear to have the same problem -- each individual magnet is not as strong, and is held into the rod by more than just glue.

1.0 out of 5 stars Danger of tiny magnets, March 21, 2006
This review is from: Magnetix 60 Count - Extenders (Toy)
Hey parents - This is serious. Loose magnets can mean severe injury or death for young children in the home. Two incidents from Magnetix toys with loose magnets are reported in this Public Health warning http://www.metrokc.gov/health/news/06031601.htm. If you have young children, or young visitors, don't ask for replacements for your loose magnets, consider throwing away the the entire toy! Better yet, ask the store or the manufacturer for a refund if you think it is defective.

We bought a similar toy two years ago for our 5-year old son (Magnetix Translucent Curves with the word "Magnetix" stamped on each link). We also have other children in the home. At this time three of the little magnets have come out. It seems to happen most when we put the curves end to end and the power of one magnet pulled another magnet out from its pocket in another curved piece. Basically, there is nothing holding the magnets in! There is no "lip" and there is no adhesive on each end of the curved piece. The magnets are shaped like small cylinders. I am not talking about the larger balls which are just metal and are not magnets.

And yes, these magnets have awesome power! I put one of the little guys on my finger and another one attracted right through it - from the other side of my finger. Amazing yet scary.

Based on our family's negative experience with the Magnetix Translucent Curves product, I do not recommend buying this item, the Magnetix 60 Count Extender Magnetic Set.
