This review is from: Magnificent But Not War: The Battle of Ypres, 1915 (Hardcover)
The second battle of Ypres is overlooked compared to the first battle of October and November 1914, which stopped the Germans from outflanking the aliies to the north. It is also forgotten in large part in comparison to the brutal Passchendaele campaign of 1917, which is still a huge part of British military history. For a blow by blow, unit by unit depiction of the second battle, from the mine attack on Hill 60, through the first gas attacks on the western front at Gravenstafel to the bloodbath at St. Julien to the end of the battle a month later at Bellewaarde Ridge this is the greatest liveliest account of the battle ever written. Tremendous battle scenes and awesome accounts of individual heroism! Neither for the faint of heart nor the military enthusiast or First World War scholar, this is for those of us who are, the best account of this relatively neglected battle written. Absolutely wondeful, first rate battle writing and very poignant and touching in imagery. A must read!!!
