This is one of those films that is shown on tv once and you dont see for many many years. I was thrilled to find this one and i hope that the powers that be choose to include this one on their to do list for dvd and future such items so the masses will not miss out on the beautiful performance jobs that each of these fine actors give. Wow! You cant believe in perfection until you see something that is so perfect as this movie. I think its an important historical peice and I wish there were more movies like it about the people we call our forefathers and mothers. I call this very well done and Burgess Meredith is spectacular in his role as James Madison, just so endearing. Ginger Rogers is wonderful as Dolly and you can't help being impressed with David Niven as the intense Aron Burr. See this if you can and I hope they get a dvd out soon, cause everyone should see these three and their fabulous co stars show you in a personable way, the human and sensitive side of those who helped build this country. And in a way so did the fine actors here in this fine story about love and living and struggle that is still true today.

Just a couple of points on former reviews. One, heeled pumps did exist in the 1790 and two, so did wide skirts at the time of the revolutionary wars at the start of this movie. I am a student of the Regency/ early 1800's and Dolly's costumes where spot on, Arron Burr and James Madison's clothes where mostly right, only turned down collars rather than turned up with thick cravats were wrong, and they should have been wearing cut away coats. That said, this was a good movie and well worth buying it to watch. Ginger Rogers might not have resembled Dolly, but she honoured her by being so beautiful and acting in a fine dignified way. Remember in 1940's Hollywood romance and drama where more important than the exact truth in these kind of movies. All actors in Magnificent did a great job, and although now it isn't always considered truthful, and Ginger as Dolly Madison thought to be wrong for the part, I hold the opinion that she is as I always think of Dolly now.

I love all of Ginger's movies she's just the best. She really didn't receive enough praise as far as I'm concerned for her vast amount of work. David Niven is a favorite too and I thought that Burgess Meredith was really good in this. He and Ginger made a good pair in the end. They were also together in Tom, Dick and Harry.

Ostensibly set in the late eighteenth century, MAGNIFICENT DOLL is a biopic of Dolley Madison (Ginger Rogers), who is forced into marriage with her first husband John Todd (Horace McNally); suffers a bereavement due to the plague, and encounters dashing senator Aaron Burr (David Niven). The two of them fall in love, but Dolley discovers to her cost that Aaron is not quite the romantic hero she first assumed. His ambition often gets the better of his reason, so much so that he is prepared to flout the constitution to achieve his ends. Eventually Dolley marries Senator James Madison (Burgess Meredith) and condemns Aaron to a life of perpetual isolation - a free man yet with no one to support him either politically or personally.

Released in the year immediately following the end of World War II, Frank Borzage's film underlines the importance of the constitution, especially the parts focusing on freedom, the rule of law and social equality. There are long sequences involving Madison, Dolley and Aaron which discuss such topics: sometimes it seems that the film has sacrificed plot-development for propaganda. Aaron is a superficially attractive character, but he believes in despotic rule in which everyone should submit to his will. He needs to be ousted in order for the American way of life to continue.

Stylistically speaking, MAGNIFICENT DOLL oscillates between love-scenes involving Dolley and Aaron (with H. J. Salter's lush score appearing somewhat intrusive), and sequences of political intrigue and/or debate. Dolley's first supper-party is impressively staged, with Dolley and Madison sat at either end of a long table, flanked by congressmen and their spouses.

If for no other reason, this film deserves to be watched for Ginger's spectacular gowns and hairstyles! Fortunately it also, has a top notch cast (David Niven and Burgess Meredith), and a fascinating historical account. Even if it's not 100%accurate, who cares? Ginger Rogers is unbelievably gorgeous, and has fabulous chemistry with both of her leading men. I have most of Ginger's films, and this is one I find myself re watching quite a bit. High recommend for sure, especially for serious fans of Miss Rogers.

I saw it as a teenager when it first came out. And, as far as i can remember, it's been that long before I found it again on this blu-ray. Ginger is just gorgeous! And, David Niven is a great Aaron Burr. But, in quiet way, Burgess Meredith as James Madison, in my opinion, captures this movie. And, recreated on blu-ray, it looks as good as it did when i first saw it.

This is Ginger Rogers at her best in depth of acting ability and beauty. The screen chemistry between her and Burgess Meredith is wonderful. A classic movie that deserves your attention.
