This volume presents the history and archaeology of Mayan civilization between 1000 B.C. and A.D. 1500.

Chapter One reveals the discovery of Mayan civilization and the fascinating story of the translation of the Mayan language. In Chapter Two we learn about the rise of key Mayan cities such as Tikal and El Mirador. The excavation of the tomb of Lord Pacal in the Temple of Inscriptions at Palenque is related in Chapter Three. Chapter Four explores the probable link between the Toltecs and the Maya. The book also describes Mayan blood-letting ceremonies, human sacrifices, mythology, and astronomy.
