5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Wow... what an excellent historical. IJ is really an interesting writer. This was a wonderful romance (love story) & also had a very involved plot. It kept moving, never allowing me to grow bored. I will have to say that it had a touch of gore that I don't care for & had to skim over - but not enough to ruin the book for me. It is set in the late 1500's when...

2.0 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Rogue
I assure all of you that I am the biggest fan of Iris Johansen. Ive read most of her books and her Wind Dancer Series is my ultimate favourite. But this book was so.. disapointing. It fell flat throughout. It didnt have a moment of sizzle in it. The historical intrigue involving Elizabeth seemed like it was put in as an afterthought. Comparitively, Storm Winds was such a...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, May 14, 2003

Wow... what an excellent historical. IJ is really an interesting writer. This was a wonderful romance (love story) & also had a very involved plot. It kept moving, never allowing me to grow bored. I will have to say that it had a touch of gore that I don't care for & had to skim over - but not enough to ruin the book for me. It is set in the late 1500's when Elizabeth is on the throne in England & James is on the throne in Scotland. Of course anything to do with that time period revolves around potential plots to overthrow a throne or two - this story is no exception. However, IJ did it in a very different way. The love story was really an enjoyable one to me. The hero & heroine definitely had their differences to work out, but they didn't fight & hate each other all the way through the book like in so many of the stories from this timeframe. (Also, I would be very remiss to not mention that a couple of the love scenes are enough to make a person fan herself & glance around to make sure no one else is looking!) The heroine started out being a little too naive but she learned her lessons well & turned out to be such a wonderful lady. The hero was a very hard man, as all of them had to be in that time, but he was exceptional from beginning to end (& a lover to die for!) :)
It's not your light reading type, but if you like a true love story with a very involved plot then don't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STORY, November 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Magnificent Rogue (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book that I have read that really seem to go along with history with Queen Elizabethan times. What a history lesson, I think if we were taught history with the passion that the book was written I would have paid more attention to it in school. Iris Johansen is a great writer and I will be looking for her other historical romances.

The characters were fantastic, the plot very interesting, the love very moving. I congratulate Ms Johansen for daring to take sexual intimacy beyond the two common positions. It was well written and beautiful because both found great pleasure in the experiences with each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking adventure novel, passionate love story, and action thriller rolled into one, April 5, 2007
This review is from: The Magnificent Rogue (Mass Market Paperback)
The Magnificent Rogue is one of the most exciting and intelligent romance novels I've ever encountered. Set in Elizabethan England, this breathtaking adventure novel, passionate love story, and action thriller rolled into one will keep the reader constantly on the edge of her seat.

Princess Kathryn Kentyre has been raised in harshness and secrecy until rescued by the sensuous, iron-willed Robert MacDarren, the strong handsome laird of an idyllic Scottish island, Craighdhu.

Robert has been forced to marry her for high political reasons. But he can never truly possess her because even Kate's presence at his home threatens all the people under his care.

Yet how can an impossible situation part passionate lovers destined to be together? Even when the fate of a nation stands in the balance?

The Magnificent Rogue features an astoundingly real and unforgettable hero and heroine along with a final plot twist that can only be described as stunning. Here is a novel to treasure and one that no romance lover should miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars YES, MAGNIFICENT, February 24, 1999

This is the fourth book I have read by Iris Johansen and I will not stop until I have read all of them. She has such a talent for creating strong characters. Her male characters are so inventive and have such creative imaginitive talents. As in all her books she has a second delightful male character in Gavin. I am still hoping for a sequel to Lion's Bride. Ms Johansen is beyond the beyond. She rates a ten for inventing such unusual story lines that not only keep me turning the pages but up half the night till I finish them. Please keep writing these unbelievably wonderful, different stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scottish Rogue to Love, A Tale to Savor, December 26, 2010

Set in 16th century England and Scotland, this is a magnificent tale of strength born of hardship and love that develops even when denied. He was the Black Robert of Craighdhu, a remote island castle in Scotland, where he was laird. He was half Spanish and had experienced their tortures as well as their pleasures. He'd been a pirate and had incurred both the praise and anger of Queen Elizabeth who has now seized him for another assignment. The Queen wants him to wed Kathryn Kentyre who he is told is Queen Mary's illegitimate daughter. Kathryn--"Kate"-- now 16 has been raised in seclusion by a vicar who is going insane and beats her. She is now bent on escape. But Robert McDarren will find her and handfast with her and then sweep her away to his castle in the Highlands where he intends to keep her for only a year. For he knows who she is threatens Craighdhu and he will do anything for his lands and his people. You won't regret reading this one. It is well written and the characters believable and the action will draw you into the world of treachery, envy, betrayal and deception that existed at the time of Queen Elizabeth and King James. A romance well worth re-reading!

I enjoyed this book every time I read it. The heroin is so like able and the Hero is of course reluctant like most heroes alll he wants is to live in peace at his home. this book was fabulous it had some sense of humor but not so much that it seemed that the writer was trying to hard andi don'tknow abotu anyone else out there but I detest books were the hero Rapes the Heroin this book has none of that. I liked this book very much I Hope you do too.
