More About the Author

Mike spent his childhood traveling in an army family to Fort Knox, KY, Fort Chaffee, AR, two visits to Germany, and Fort Campbell, KY. Mike graduated from Northwest High School (Clarksville, TN) in 1972 and earned a degree in education from Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, TN) in 1976. He taught for 14 years and then worked as an instructional supervisor until 2005. Mike earned his doctoral degree from Tennessee State University (Nashville, TN) in 2004.

Mike married Debbie Adams in 1974. They have three grown children: Jason, Ryan and Meghann. They have a standard poodle named Maggie, cat named Audrey, and a hedgehog named Dezi.

Mike attended the Governor's Academy for Teachers of Writing in 1995. He was bitten by the writing bug and has written for publication ever since! In 1997 he created a column called "Story Time" for Tennessee's oldest paper, The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle. In that weekly column, Mike reviewed children's literature, with an educator's slant. The column continues today, but, because of a demanding traveling schedule, his wife took over the column in 2003.

Mike visits nearly one hundred schools each year spreading his message that "Reading IS Magic."

5.0 out of 5 stars M is for Magnolia, September 4, 2008
This review is from: M Is For Magnolia: A Mississippi Alphabet Book (Discover America State by State) (Hardcover)
My husband plans on using this book when he reads to his kids
at the local school. Rotary has a program of reading with grade school
kids as their project. But I also thought it was a good reminder to adults of all the great things that we have in this wonderful state(we are
not native Mississippians).

4.0 out of 5 stars Like it, but hard to determine an age range for this book, November 12, 2011

This review is from: M Is For Magnolia: A Mississippi Alphabet Book (Discover America State by State) (Hardcover)
I got this book for my niece, who is still a toddler. Her Mommy loves to read to her and since they are stationed overseas, I thought a book about their native Mississippi would appeal to both Mommy and baby.

Overall the book is great. The illustrations are well done and I am pleased with it. The only thing I found a bit confusing about this book was trying to determine an age range. It is written in the language of a pre-teen reader, at best, but is an alphabet book.

Overall, though, if you're looking for a quality alphabet book, I'd reccomend this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mississippi is Home, May 31, 2008
This review is from: M Is For Magnolia: A Mississippi Alphabet Book (Discover America State by State) (Hardcover)
M Is For Magnolia: A Mississippi Alphabet Book Edition 1. (Discover America State By State. Alphabet Series)

A friend gave me this book and I bought it for my mother and sisters. I grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi - Cross road of the Blues. What I didn't know is that my uncle (George Furniss) is related to the artist who illustrated the book, Rick Anderson. I'm delighted to have it and I learned some things about Mississippi I did not know. This little book is a treasure. Joyce Murrah Owens, Waxahachie, Texas
