3.0 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Terrible Game That I Can't Stop Playing February 26, 2014
Verified Purchase
I really wanted to give this game 2 stars since I feel that's what it deserves, but 2 stars on Amazon means "I don't like it" and honestly, that's not the case at all. While this game is a repetitive slog with bad graphics, linear point a to point b level design, mediocre combat, and much more that makes this game just flat-out bad, I have some strange attraction to it where I want to just keep playing for 10 more minutes of repetitive enemy encounters just to see what my next piece of loot is. As with many loot RPGs, I often forgive the repetitive nature of the gameplay because of the addictive nature of this style of game.

So with all of that said, is there anything good I can say about this game? Honestly, not much, but I'll try.

Firstly, for a game with such a low budget, I must say that I'm impressed with how much voice acting there is in Magus. Most of the voice acting is, quite frankly, not very impressive, but it's impressive how much there is of it. And while most of it is pretty lousy, there are quite a few lines of dialogue that'll make you chuckle a little bit. Let's just say that this game isn't afraid to be a little vulgar despite its T for Teen rating. It must also be noted that most of the dialogue and story takes place in-game with dialogue options.

Secondly, I like loot RPGs, so it has that going for it. Enemies drop tons of gear, in addition to gear in treasure chests. Honestly, loot is the main hook in Magus for me. It keeps me playing. I'll admit that a lot of the cheesy dialogue is entertaining and probably helps me slog through a game like this, but the loot is the main motivation.

Thirdly, this is a short RPG. I'm talking 6-ish hours to see and do everything Magus has to offer. Now why would I consider this a positive?

4.0 out of 5 stars The "So bad it's good" of video games March 1, 2014
I bought this game only for the sole fact that there wasn't anything else worth purchasing at the time. After a day of playing, I can say without a doubt I have never laughed so hard playing a game. The game is crap but all of the systems and mechanics interlock perfectly to create a whole much greater than the sum of its crap parts. In much the same way, Magus’ myriad failings play off of each other brilliantly, turning what could have been a train wreck into a roller coaster of incredible, organic hilarity. It is a perfect storm of terrible ideas and botched execution, endlessly enjoyable in spite of itself. Were you to play it with your friends, perhaps as part of some raucous drinking game, the laughter might well kill you before the alcohol. Like Birdemic, The Room, or Troll 2, Magus is so terrible that it can only be called a masterpiece. I urge you to buy it, but only play sitting next to a good friend on the couch. Your laughter will be heard across whichever city you reside.

It is kind of crappy. Bad graphics, mediocre game play. Possibly the best dialogue of any game which makes up for alot of the bad parts. Laugh out loud funny. Be warned that you are going into this game ironicaly or not at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Won't Let Your Hopes Up May 21, 2014
This game is everything you have heard - bad.

With a style that looks like a late 90s PC game, it really just require you to hold down the R1 button and walk.....and walk.....and walk.

With a terrible story, poor controls, and a somewhat useless skill tree, Magus is no one's first choice. But if you can get a copy cheap, invite some gamer friends over and have a few laughs. Not bad enough to be a cult game, but just bad enough for some easy, mindless, entertainment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yeeeaaaaaaaa....this game is bad. April 22, 2014
I know this is going to sound like a broken record but I too heard the usual reviews in that this game was so bad it was good but found out that...nooooooooo...it's bad. I'm a big fan of gems such as Two Worlds and Arcania to name a couple but I could not overlook the overall poor execution in Magus.

I mean there are some good ideas here such as different powers, lots of loot, interesting enemies, etc but good god is this game bad. The powers which are these rapid fire balls of light seem to only differ from one another based on color, size, and spread - I can't really tell the difference. Along the same lines, the aiming is just ridiculous-pretty much swerve into place to where enemies are in the line of fire.

The graphics are indeed pretty dated. I think calling them PS2 graphics is a little off but they are definitely not pushing the PS3 envelope here. The textures are pretty fuzzy and everything is pretty dark-probably to mask more detail. Did I mention there is no control for brightness or gamma? Yeeeeaaaaaaa.....

The dialogue is bad sure but that's actually one of the good things about this game I think. The protagonist literally looks like a doofus and talks like he is super bad. Just a really strange choice there but it can be entertaining. The dialogue of the enemies are pretty annoyingly funny especially of the dragon men. It literally sounds like you doing your best attempt at a monster voice-pretty bad.

The loot is interesting in that what you find can be worn such as belts, amulets, rings, armor, helmets, etc. And you can assign various gems you find to make them more powerful such as increasing strength, dexterity, green power, etc.
