4.0 out of 5 stars A Book that Makes You Think, January 6, 2003

This review is from: Magwort and the Master (Paperback)
As I settled into my easy chair with a copy of "Magwort and the Master," I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

"A children's book for adults and an adult's book for children?" I thought. "Hmmmmmmm."

Well, Michael L. McCoy delivers on that promise and more in his latest, thought-compelling work.

Magwort is a wild horse who has never been conquered. He is his own master...until he encounters THE Master and the discovers the true meaning of meekness! Without spoiling the tale for you, I can tell you that there is wonderful imagery in this adventurous story. For example, the images of Christian baptism are most compelling.

One finds one's thoughts returning again and again to some part of Magwort's story, long after reading it. It is a fictional tale that touches on the non-fiction of daily life for each of us. It contains a message of deep, confessional faith, yet is not "preachy" in any way. It is a delightful story!

I am pleased to recommend this book to all children, aged five years to an hundred and five! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Desert first -- but a full course meal, February 14, 2003

I have given this one as gifts to several people -- including a niece, a brother-in-law, and a friend that I write in prison.

So far, it's unanimous -- it looks like it's going to be simplistic and childish, but its deep. It emphasizes that salvation comes from Christ's righteousness, and not our own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Gem, January 9, 2003

Although written as fith in The Chronicles of Peniel Series, Magwort and the Master can easily stand alone. It is a deceptively quick read. Once is not enough to mine every nugget of insight; a thousand times will be too few to have completed the job. It is a book to grow up and old on, for each reading in each season of life will bring to light a new facet of this gem's beauty. It is Christian allegory at its finest, and as such, is a catechetical jewel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, January 8, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Magwort and the Master (Paperback)
I think Mr. McCoy does a great job of telling a great horse story, and then relating it to a biblical moral, and especially how Christ does everything for us, even though we think it isn't always ggod for us it really is the best thing for us in the end. Read the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tale of Christ's Commanding Love, January 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Magwort and the Master (Paperback)
Magwort is a fantastic little book about the lengths to which Christ will go to bring a person (or in this case a horse) into his kingdom. The book relies on the same sort of allegory/reality that animates the work of CS Lewis and is a delightful tale sure to make grown-ups and children happy they read it. (The illustrations are just what a story book should have: just enough to lead the imagination, but not photographic reality.)

I found this to be a fun and accuratemetaphorical story of how our Savior battled satan and death to win our salvation, and doesn't give up on us.In the vein of C.S. Lewis' The Narnia Chronicles. This would be a good story to read to kids and then show the parallels with scripture.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye!, January 3, 2003

This review is from: Magwort and the Master (Paperback)
When I first looked at the book, it seemed so small but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the it. The story is well written and engaging on the surface. It is even better when you look at the meanings within the allegory. Even my 7 year old daughter loved the book and was able to decipher many of the symbols. We have read through it many times since it arrived and I look forward to reading more books written by Pastor McCoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Allegory, January 3, 2003
By
Karl Weber (Decatur, Il., USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magwort and the Master (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading "Magwort and the Master." It is a delightfl allegory following the Biblical World view. Specifically it deals with freedom and the bondage of the will. In a light setting it shows how a wild horse, one that is free, is in bondage to itself, its instincts, and its wolrdview. Then, when the Master claims the horse and subdues it, true freedom is found as the horse is freed from itself to serve another.
A nice easy read.
