all mahjongers should have this
to me, this is the "bible" of mahjong. all you need to know to learn to play and follow the correct rules is in this book. our mahjong group each has her own book and we refer to them all the time, especially for the special hands. if you play mahjong- you want this book over any others. the others are nice, but this one is the best.

Rudimentary
This is good how-to book but doesn't have anything in it to help you learn strategy beyond the beginner level.

Playing the form we play in Honolulu, this book covers all the bases and gives thorough explanations of play, scoring and strategies. It is a "must have" for our group. Mah Jong!

Without the embroidery of things not related to playing the game, this is the outline for Mah Jong as it is played in social settings. No cards that change from year to year, variations that impact play carefully set aside into their own sections so that you can know them, or skip them and concentrate on the basic game.
This should be everyone's introduction to playing mah jong.
