Amazon.com Review

Ask any player about the rules to mah jong and the inevitable answer is a frustrating, "Well, that depends." The game has so many variations that the rules change according to city, country, and even year. But don't worry--this book provides a solution by presenting clear and simple rules that combine the ancient spirit of the game with some of the best modern innovations. Once you learn the basics here, it's much simpler to pick up local variants. Even old pros may find some new information on special hands to liven up their house rules. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

to me, this is the "bible" of mahjong. all you need to know to learn to play and follow the correct rules is in this book. our mahjong group each has her own book and we refer to them all the time, especially for the special hands. if you play mahjong- you want this book over any others. the others are nice, but this one is the best.

Playing the form we play in Honolulu, this book covers all the bases and gives thorough explanations of play, scoring and strategies. It is a "must have" for our group. Mah Jong!

For the most part, clearly written and great for getting started. However, I had to search the internet to find a better description of how prevailing wind works.

I am new to Mahjong and wanted to buy a beginner's guide to help as I learn the game. I misunderstood "Western" to mean the non-Japanese version. I was wrong! I wanted a guidebook to help play the National Mah Jong League game utilizing the jokers, the annual cards and played with 166 tiles. THIS IS NOT THE BOOK!! $10 wasted.

This is a very good book for those who are beginning to play Japanese style Mah Jong ( That is, without jokers and combinations that change annually )- Good explanation of the game, plus an excellent section on strategy.

I have been using this book for over 3 years in playing and teaching the Western method of Mah Jong. it is laid out well, and becomes less confusing as one learns the game. It could have more strategy on the Razszle or Charleston. I like the last chapter on Strategy that was added to this updated edition. I would like to see a bit of History on the game added to make the book more complete. Over all......it is a good, solid book of instruction to the Western method of play.
