5.0 out of 5 stars still the Queen of Gospel, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Mahalia Jackson 1957-1962 (DVD)
This is a wonderful portrait of a magnificent lady in her prime. The performances are solid and inspiring. The later segments from the 1960's are beautiful. The song "How Great Thou Art" is the best rendition I have ever heard. The interviews from 1957 give us a glimpse of the character, heart and soul of Mahalia Jackson. She radiates love and intelligence. She really was an ambassador of good will on a mission to unite the peoples of this earth. I do recommend this to anyone interested in fine singing and the life of Mahalia.

At least this wonderfull, partly in color DVD came out. Long unissued TV-appearances from 1960 - 1962 The Bell Telephone Hour with 'Great gettin'up morning', 'Summertime', Sometimes I Feel like a motherless child','Joshua fir the battle', He's got the whole world', ' Bless this house','I'm grateful','How great Thou art'and in b/w from 1957 'It don't cost very much','When the saints','You'll never walk alone','It is not sercret', 'somebody bigger than you and I' put in an interview.
A great DVD, not only highly recomended for Mahalia Jackson fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mahalia Jackson: She is still the Queen, December 1, 2007
This review is from: Mahalia Jackson 1957-1962 (DVD)
Mahalia Jackson is still the premier intrepreter of African-American Gospel Music. She successfully blends Blues, Jazz, Opera, and Cathedral-like tones to create a powerful, rousing sound known as Gospel. When she sings " In that Great Gettin' Up Morning" you know that one day God will make the wrongs of humanity right.

I think she was gifted from God! She still sounds powerful now than she did in the sixties. I recommend people to study her style as a requirement to study classical music. She is the queen that reignth!!!!

Khalil Canady!
