I bought this Ukulele from Amazon. I also own a Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele and a Lanikai LU-21C concert Ukulele.
But this Mahalo Soprano Ukulele is my favorite Ukulele.

3.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
For twenty bucks, this is a good starter ukulele for someone who is not sure if they will stick with it. It's also good as a toy for a kid. It looks kinda cheap and is made in China, not Hawaii like a "real" ukulele, so don't expect it to automatically turn you into the next Israel Kamawakahukaduka...however you spell it. I really need to learn that guy's last name...

I bought this Ukulele from Amazon. I also own a Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele and a Lanikai LU-21C concert Ukulele.
But this Mahalo Soprano Ukulele is my favorite Ukulele.
The strings stay some what tuned after a few days of stretching. The sound is not great when compared to my Lanikai with Aquila strings but good enough for everyday practicing. The only string that does not sound as good is the C string being the lowest in tone. The geared tuners works well. The finishing is satisfactory. The included bag is good enough for me. This Ukulele is perfect for students for it has good intonation, playable, and cheap. I am very satisfy with this Ukulele. Best Value for my money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money, August 4, 2010

If you are expecting a concert-grade instrument for this price, you are living in a fool's paradise. However, this was tunable, playable, and the sound is pretty good. The case that mine came with is simple cloth, but since most don't come with any case, it's good enough.

If you have never bought an instrument new, or replaced strings on an existing instrument, you should be aware that the strings stretch a lot when first put under tension. This may be what caused many poor reviews. For the first few days, just keep tuning it, maybe a little sharp if you have the mind to, and the strings will be okay. Even an hour after first tuning my unit, the strings stretched so it was several full tones off. (Be patient, it's just a baby!!)

Bottom line: If you want a good uke, maybe for taking on a camping trip, or teaching your kids to play (What mine is for), this is a good product. If you need an "Excellent" instrument, plan on paying more than $100 and go to a music store where you can test/play many, many different instruments until you find the one you want.

Fantastic little instrument for the price. The sound quality is a bit better than I expected for $25. The strings will take a few days to break in (don't expect them to hold their tune for more than a few minutes at first), but once they do the uke hardly ever needs tuning.

I have baught this little instrument from this same spot. it is good material but the strings must be tuned every once in a while. I found it hard to enjoy music with the natural strings that had come with it so i had bought Aquila Nylgut strings and it has improved tremendously. I use the standard G C E A tunning and it sounds just fine. The only problem i have encountered is that the inside supports can break easy and it needs to be treated with care. Overall i would rate it a 5/5 considering it is the best starter ukulele.

This is a great product for the price. It's my first ukulele so I don't have anything to compare it to, but for $20, I think it was very worth the purchase. At first, you need to tune the ukulele. There's a free guitar tuner that you can use online with a microphone on your computer. It's called AP guitar tuner. Just set it on high strung tuning and you can tune your uke to a high G. The first few days of playing, the uke will keep going out of tune. This is because the strings need stretching, so it's nothing to worry about. Just keep retuning it for a while (you end up needing to pull the strings tighter each time). But after a few days of continuous playing, the uke rarely goes out of tune now. The set of strings on the uke sound good. They are clear and I believe, nylon. I bought a set of aquila strings and was planning on replacing the strings on this uke, but have decided not to do so any time soon. The strings that come with it, when in tune, seem to be good enough for now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the money!, February 26, 2011

I received this ukulele just this week and already I'm playing up a storm. It took about 10 hours of playing before the strings stopped falling out of tune, but now the uke stays tuned for hours of play. As someone who wanted to learn how to play without spending a lot of money, this has been perfect for me. It's obviously a beginner's instrument, but for the price? It can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing !, April 15, 2011

like most of the reviews, I am very impressed with this little guy. I play guitar and bought this more as a joke, but I'm in love now. I strum around on it while I'm watching TV or just laying around the house. And its a great party favor. I won't being going on tour with it, but the lower cost means I'm not afraid of it being passed around a party and getting a few nicks. I dint have to much trouble with it holding tune. If you just pre-stretch the strings (tune them a step high) and let it sit like that for a bit then tune it down it you will only have to re-tune once a day, if that.

Update: If you replace the strings with some quality Nylgut strings form Aquila you've giving new life to this little uke. The stock stings are adequate, but better strings are well worth the $10. They sound better, louder, and because they are softer and have more give they are easier to play. I stand by my rating of this uke, but for a little extra on strings, you'll do a lot better.

It looks kinda cheap and is made in China, not Hawaii like a "real" ukulele, so don't expect it to automatically turn you into the next Israel Kamawakahukaduka...however you spell it. I really need to learn that guy's last name. Anyhow, the sound is also toylike and is fine for practicing your fingering, but not for performing in front of anyone. I had a little trouble at first keeping it in tune, as the pegs would untighten themselves the second I let go of them. After a couple of weeks though, it stayed in tune just fine. Guess you have to break it in before it starts behaving. Anyways, I am upgrading to a Lanikai now that I know I want to keep going with the ukulele, and my Mahalo uke is going on the wall as a neato bedroom decoration. So for me, this purchase was a win-win.

I wanted to buy a cheap instrument so I could learn how to play in my free time. This one fit the bill. It has a decent sound and quality for the price, but don't expect professional quality here. Perfect for a hobby or a blossoming interest, but I would look elsewhere if you want to be a serious ukulele player.
