Magnificent performance,
By Rob (Nederland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony 8 (Audio CD)
Most people prefer CSO with Solti for this symphony, but this performance is the greatest: there is: heartfelt singing in Prey's 'Ewiger Wonnebrand' and Riegel's 'Jungfrau, rein im schonsten Sinne' and especially in 'Blicket auf' its last phrase of 'Gottin, bleibe gnadig!' really breaks my heart. The final is perfect, starting with 'Komm!' and later on the women perfectly mingling with each other in 'Alles vergangliche', I get bored listening to Solti, Abbado, Kubelik, Bernstein, Haitink and Tennstedt. This is what Mahler must have got in mind and besides the great singing of those choirs, the orchestra is top in it, too. I can't hear mistakes and the sound is wonderful with great brass and sensitive strings. The final is much slower than most people are used to, being used to Solti, but this one works. This recording makes me religious for the time being. No discussions with me, this is it.

A fabulous re-thinking of Mahler's Eighth,
By
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony No. 8 (MP3 Download)
It is unfortunate that with so much Mahler out there....and so much hurling of superlatives for this or that conductor that this Eighth has not gotten the proper respect it deserves nor its acclaim. So often, when conductors try to do a deep dive on a work by taking it slower to search for the hidden meanings found in slower tempi it often ends up just sounding like Slooooooooower tempi....I always think of Maazel as the most conspicuous guilty party to this. But here...I tell you...I thought I would always love my Mahler 8 in the hands of Solti or Abbado but I have since changed my mind when you hear the clarity and nuance and sense of power wielded by Inbal when he slows his forces at the end of Part II to glide into the ending. This is not a quiet sunset but a slow massive eruption of sound that will leave you saying "wow!" at the end. (Check out the rest of Inbal's cycle, too. esp. No.5).Highly Recommended.
