I have become a big fan of Mr. Zander's. The CD discussions of the symphonies are worth the price alone. He is clearly passionate about the music, as well as what's behind the music, delving into the composers life and perhaps Mahler's perspective. After listening to Zander's discussions and taking in his performance, it is quite interesting to go back to other versions I own and listen to them. Luckily, Mahler's genius is so great, that any well performed interpretation stands on it's own even if you disagree with certain aspects of it. Highly recommended.

Mahler 6th may be the most personsal of the output of nine(perhaps ten) symphonies .The hammer crash at the end of 4th mov.
signifies the composer personal three crashes; his resignation from his post as Wiener Opera chief conductor .The death of his
daughter from scarlet fever and the betrayal of his wife Elma.
The version Zander presents here is an example of his belief that Mahler symphonies should be played with free space to the
expression of each individual group of the orchestra's seperate tools (i.e strings woods and brass playing in a seperate way
out of the whole harmony). In this perception the symphony is heard as many solo concerti combining the structure of a
great compound)
This is not a version adopted by other conductors (mainly Bernstein and Barbirolli) which apply Mahler symphonies as one
harmonical unit and the orchestra tools are subservents to make the harmony sacred.
I intend to find this attitude as more compelling to Mahler wishes but I still respect the tremendous work of Zander
through Mahler symphonies especially the detailed debate he proposes to each symphony explaining the sources
of each movement.
The sound of Telarc is not the best mainly because the compound of Zander version that give the impression that
the symphony is dismentled to seperate ingridients.

Play it load but be ready for the hammer crashes in the fourth movement. This sounds fantastic in 5.1 multichannel playback.
