If you have been ambivalent about building one of those gorgeous Dumas mahogany models but were afraid to jump in this book will allay your fears. It is filled with lots of step by step details, photographs, and line drawings. It also has photos of some of the most incredibly detailed mahogany boat models by the masters of the craft.
This book will be at my side when I build my mahogany Chris~Craft!

The Mahogany Boat Builder's Bible,
By Oldtribefan (Walnut Creek, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mahogany in Scale (Paperback)
No one should start to build their first scale boat model without this book on their workbench. Pat, a master builder, gives step-by-step guidance so that even the beginning modeler will complete a miniature masterpiece that will be the talk of the pond.
I wish this book was available when I built my first boat; many of the issues that slowed it's construction are addressed. The number and quality of the photos illustrating the narrative are first-rate. A must-have book.

Very Informative,

This review is from: Mahogany in Scale (Paperback)
For anyone who is attempting a mahogany remote control boat, this book is an essential. It is extremely informative and enjoyable to read. You will learn all kinds of tips and tricks to achieving perfection with your model. Although they are black and white, there are plenty of pictures in the book that are clear and show exactly how things are done. There are also great tips for customizing your model and doing a few things differently from the instructions. The book mainly focuses on the Dumas Racing Runabout but I am building an old "Sterling" model and I still learned a lot from this book. BUY THIS BOOK. It will save you time and money in the long run, and it's a pleasure to read.

Must have book for your first model kit,
By
This review is from: Mahogany in Scale (Paperback)
The difference between this book and others on boat modeling is that it is geared towards kits as opposed to scratch built models. If you are new to the hobby as I am, you may find starting with a kit a little less intimidating especially if you want to start with a large detailed RC model. Most kits come with everything you will need to complete the model aside from electronics, glue, paint and tools. Many of the bulkheads and more intricate parts a pre-cut & are designed to fit together with a little sanding. And while they do come with instructions, you'll benefit from having an experienced modeler looking over your shoulder. And if that's not an option, this book is the next best thing. I would recommend this book to anyone starting a wood model boat kit of any type. Even though Pat uses the Dumas Chris-Craft racer as his subject, most of the techniques presented apply to wood kits in general and he interjects advice on variances that you may experience with other kits. New hobbyist may want to stick to the instructions to be on the safe side but he interjects just enough customization and deviations from the kit to serve as a catalyst for anyone who is thinking of venturing out a little and wants to create their own personal touch on their model. There is a chapter on tools as well and he does a good job of differentiating between what is necessary and what you can do if you choose to expand your tool repertoire with a lathe for instance. And if a lathe is not in your budget, there is good advice as well as an appendix on suppliers of pre-made upgraded running hardware, Flags and fittings, wood, graphics, etc.
