Book Description

August 21, 2008
Slicing open the afternoon mail rips apart Nola Stevens' secure- but tedious-life in Seattle. Twenty-three years ago, she moved from her father's house to her husband's house, barely pausing to attend her high school graduation. But now her marriage is over. Her ex-husband's moved on to something else entirely-leaving Nola parked on her friend Malia's sofa bed until further notice. When Malia's summoned home to Maui for her father's seventy-fifth birthday luau, she persuades Nola to come along. Hawaii astounds her-non-stop sunshine, aloha spirit, and fresh fruit cheaper than canned. And then there's the half-naked sculptor who keeps sneaking up behind her. "Mai Tai Butterfly" is a three-fold love story: a love of place, of a man, and the love that makes the other two possible. Living aloha is the best revenge. JoAnn Bassett grew up in Seattle, but always preferred palm trees to pine trees. She started a business and raised a son, hoping someday to make a day at the beach an everyday event. In 1996, she and her husband bought a home on Maui and loved every minute they spent there. She now lives in Southern Arizona, a shift from palms to saguaros. She thinks of Maui often, and enjoys writing about life on what's been called "the most idyllic island in the Pacific."

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Read, September 1, 2010
This review is from: Mai Tai Butterfly (Paperback)
Mai Tai Butterfly is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Happily anticipating your next book. I'll have to admit, that "ex-husband Frank" in the novel reminded me of my own ex-husband in so many ways, it was hilarious. I've never been to Hawaii - but felt as though I was there with Nola and the rest of the gang. I hope you are writing more books as I write this JoAnn - thank you again for putting out such a great first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, November 4, 2008

This review is from: Mai Tai Butterfly (Paperback)
Mai Tai Butterfly is a great read. It has you in the first chapter drawing you into the book where it is hard to put it down until you are finished. It reminds you that life is never stuck, stagnant, or stale, for each moment is ever-new and fresh. I loved the setting for I have been to Maui and the visual I had while reading the book made it so very real. Thanks JoAnn for a great book. Please write another soon.

What a fun read! For those of you who have visited Maui, it brings back pleasant memories, and for those who haven't been there, makes you long to visit. The story line is believable and captivating. A great read for the weekend, rainy days, or for those fortunate enough, a day at the beach.
