Still as vibrant and energetic as it was in 1985,
This review is from: Mai Tai (Expanded Edition) (Audio CD)
This was the debut album of Dutch soul trio Mai Tai back in 1985. After having scored a couple of minor top 40 hits in Holland with 'What Goes On', 'Body and Soul' and the exquisite ballad 'Am I Losing You Forever', they hit the big time with the single 'History'. Significantly, the song became an even bigger hit in the UK, hitting the top 10. It seemed as if this success in the UK charts was the incentive for Dutch DJ's to start paying more attention to them and their next two single releases 'Female Intuition' and 'Turn Your Love Around' both hit the Dutch top 10.
This attractive re-release not only contains the 9 songs from the original debut album, but it has been remastered and expanded with the 12 inch versions of 'History', 'What, Where, When, Who' and the three major singles from their second album '1 Touch 2 Much', 'Female Intuition' and 'Turn Your Love Around' (the last two being 12 inch versions as well). After their second album, Mai Tai slowly started to fade from view. Their next two singles 'Bet That's What You Say' and 'Fight Fire With Fire', as well as their third album 'Cool Is The Rule' were commercially far less successful. When their brand-new single 'Dance In The Light' and an accompanying 'Best Of' album failed to set the charts alight again in 1988, Mildred unfortunately decided to leave the group to pursue a solo career. Although Mai Tai still exists today, they have never been able to repeat the heights of their peak period which was 1984-1986. However, this 1985 debut album remains one of my favourite soul/disco albums of all time. It's still as vibrant and energetic today as it was back in 1985.

Mai Tai - Mai Tai...,

As a member of Funkytowngrooves UK. I stumbled onto the Dutch Group Mai Tai (along with the UK Group "The Cool Notes") on their website. Even though I had never heard of the group, the price at the time ($12.99) was right and I took a chance. Good, harmonic vocals and good beats describe this album. They were better known over in the Europe and was able to score a hit (or two) in the U.K. during the 80's. Listen to the available samples, before you buy. Take a chance! I did!
I rate Mai Tai...4 stars! Also, check out the Funkytowngrooves UK website...they just might have what you're looking for, it late 70's to late 80's is your thing (like mine)! See [...] P.S., I give these folks a plug whenever I can!

They were "History" way too fast,

One of few (if any) groups of this type hailing from the Netherlands, Mai Tai burst out of nowhere in 1985 with the old-school favorite "History," an in-your-face "I'm dumping you"-type song that has all the catchiness and robust flavor of a great American groove. The rest of the album is well deserving of a listen, highlights including the synth-funk pleasure "Rhythm Of The Street" and the guitar-heavy ballad "Am I Losing You Forever." The group made a couple of other albums in 1986 & 1988 but never had any other hits (at least not here in the states), and today they have pretty much met the same fate that many one-hit wonders do.
