I'm not sure if Maid of Gold shares many commonalities with Music by Cavelight by Blockhead, but is original in its own right..and in some instances quite a departure from other instrumental hip-hop albums I own. The drums have Sixtoo's flair to them, and the album also feature his accompanying band who assisted the production on Chewing On Glass and Other Miracle Cures. The odd arrangement of instruments really complement the eccentric mood that seems to permeate the album.
It is indeed difficult to classify or articulate the feel of Maid Of Gold, which is why I feel that Sixtoo took the same musical approach to Chewing On glass... The songs are downtempo but rich in places, and indeed the strongest track is the symphonic "when i was your age". A lot of people I know were not impressed by this album, and found it to be lacking. But like so many other hip-hop instrumental albums, the effect of Maid of Gold really sinks in after a few spins, and is solid. Fans should also be on the lookout for Stigg's debut on Endemik Records set for release sometime in 05.

Not trance, but good, hard-hitting downtempo,

I honestly really don't know much about the music that I listen to. I don't know what the correct genre is, I don't know if the songs are made with live instruments, and I don't know what words should be used to describe how the music sounds. All I know is that it sounds great to me. Maid of Gold is a great album. The album I could best compare it to is Music by Cavelight, by Blockhead. Every track is very mellow, hard-bass-hitting, and full of interesting sounds from seemingly-live instruments. This is not an album that makes you want to dance; although some tracks will make your head bob. It's great for background music, it's not repetitive, and all of the tracks are unique. The bass is strong, the beats are varied and the tracks were produced well. When first listening to the album, I never heard one track that was too weird or annoying to the extent that it made me want to skip to the next. I give this album 4 stars for originality, good production, great samples, and good solid beats. Because I already clicked the 5th star, I'm stuck with it I guess, but it's still worth checking out. There are no lyrics; the whole album is like instrumental hip-hop. Related albums include Blockhead - Music by Cavelight, Abstrackt Keal Agram - Self-Titled, and The Opus - Breathing Lessons.
