Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this live release from the British Heavy Metal maestros recorded in November 1988 at the Birmingham N.E.C. Arena during the band's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son tour. This edition includes the full and complete release of the entire show (including previously unreleased encores), which had been edited when initially released. Also includes two tracks from the main show that were cut due to time constraints.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Golden Era of Maiden's Swansong Concert March 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Maiden England is about as classic as you can get and a great time piece of when the band had the world at large. Recorded over two nights at the Birmingham NEC, the band played an incredible show for their home crowd. The setlist features the then new songs from the Seventh Son album, along with some deeper cuts and fan favorites. The band sounds fantastic, though the years constant of touring up to then began to take toll on Bruce's voice, but he still delivers a great performance. This would prove to be the last of what many consider the 'golden' lineup of the band, as Adrian Smith would soon depart over creative differences and to persue a solo career in A.S.A.P. This concert was a great bookend to Maiden's dominance in the 80's and why they earned their spot in history.

The 2013 version of this show offers many new things to those still holding on to their original copy or those who may have missed the boat the first go around. First, it's now entitled 'Maiden England '88', my guess because their current tour is entitled Maiden England but who knows. Next, the artwork. Now, I like the artwork, but for such a classic and iconic show, they should've stuck with Derek's original cover, though it is featured on Disc 2's art so they didn't totally forget. The sound on this set is fantastic compared to the original, bringing out every instrument in a clear mix. Now for the closing 3 tracks, they have never been issued before, as the original Maiden England was only issued as a edited single-disc. Reading the liner notes reveals they were specially mixed by Kevin Shirley, and they sound great and keep the flow best as possible with the original release. Overall, if you're a Maiden fan and don't own this at all or lost your old copy, now's the perfect time to get this historic show in it's entirety and sounding better than ever. Up the Irons!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Amazing Maiden March 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I've never owned this concert, so I was excited by the new release having always heard that it was great. The sound quality is excellent for a 1988 recording, and the set list is incredible. I've never heard anything live from Iron Maiden that didn't sound fantastic, so it's not much of a surprise, but I'm glad they decided to re-release it in CD and DVD formats. If you're a Maiden fanatic, you couldn't be disappointed with the quality, and if you're a casual fan, it's a near-perfect documentation of their music up through Seventh Son, with songs from almost every album (sadly, nothing from Powerslave). The songs are performed in typically entrancing fashion, and the ecstatic crowd provides a compelling backdrop to Maiden's world-class music.

As a bonus for people who already owned the older version, the CD includes three encore songs that have never been released; Run to the Hills, Running Free, and Sanctuary. Also cool is that the inlay booklet includes full lyrics for each song and nice concert pics of the band. Performed nearly 25 years ago, this show displays Maiden at the height of their prowess, though I honestly don't think they've lost a step in all those years. Their last live album, En Vivo!, which focused on their most recent full-length, was stunning it its own right, but if you love classic Maiden (and who doesn't?), this CD provides 18 tracks of pure ear candy.

Iron Maiden's latest CD is the long awaited re-release of the 1988 Birmingham NEC concerts entitled Maiden England '88 and is a must for all fans of Iron Maiden.
Some people are still whining about Iron Maiden releasing "yet another live album" but it was in concert where Maiden's true colors are shown. Maiden England had been out of print from video for years but in 2013 (25 years after it was first recorded), the concert is re-released on CD, limited 2-LP, DVD and Blu-Ray. The Maiden England concert sees Iron Maiden (at the time consisted of Bruce Dickinson on vocals; guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith (this was Smith's last shows with the band until his 1999 return); bass player Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain) perform at the tail end of the tour to support its Seventh Son Of a Seventh Son Tour. Brilliantly recorded by Martin Birch (now retired), this captures the band as they finished the Seventh Son Tour before Adrian Smith would leave the band in 1989 for ten years and one of the best Maiden performances ever (as I found out back in late 1993 after I stole the VHS from an ex-buddy).
We begin things with "Moonchild" which seamlessly goes from the intro from the record into a blazing live version. Next is a stellar "The Evil That Men Do". Next is a track (not performed live at the time since 1982) "The Prisoner" and a stellar version. Next is "Still Life" which was an awesome deep track performed live. Next is a stellar live version of "Infinite Dreams" which is superior to the studio version. We follow with a great version of "Killers". Next is "Can I Play With Madness" and still my favorite version of the track (this was excised from the CD that came with the Maiden England video in the 1990s)!

5.0 out of 5 stars A few new tracks, sounds better. March 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I have the original recording of this concert, so for me there was not much new here (a handful of new tracks). The sound quality seems better after quickly playing a track off of the old and new back to back. The concert itself is one of their better ones. Not quite the quality of Live after Death, but much better than Donnington, or the Live Ones. That said, it's Maiden so five stars is almost a given.
