4.0 out of 5 stars Set sail on this modal outing
This is the perfect introductory album for anyone who knows Herbie Hancock as only a light-funk/fusion player. On this album, arguably the best in his career, Hancock demonstrates what he was learning while working in Miles Davis' group, and even expands on those ideas. Freddie Hubbard, at the top of his game, sits in for Miles, and the remainder of Miles' group...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut Cool Jazz Album but Needs Remastering!
This is a wonderful debut for Herbie and clearly shows the influence of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" as well as provides hints of "Bitches Brew" in a couple of tracks as well i.e. modal work plus hints of the avant-garde. Freddie Hubbard does some great work here and so does Coleman on sax with Herbie expertly supporting on piano. The first and last tracks are the...

This is the perfect introductory album for anyone who knows Herbie Hancock as only a light-funk/fusion player. On this album, arguably the best in his career, Hancock demonstrates what he was learning while working in Miles Davis' group, and even expands on those ideas. Freddie Hubbard, at the top of his game, sits in for Miles, and the remainder of Miles' group sound looser as a result. But this is Hancock's show and he contributes four of the five tunes, including two jazz standards- the beautiful "Dolphin Dance" and the atmospheric title track. Equally impresive is the quiet tension displayed on "Eye of the Hurricane." Sit back and enjoy the cruise.

The first and last tracks are the strongest although there really isn't a weak track here. However, this version, unlike the clearly inaccurate product description, is not the Japanese mini-lp sleeve remastered version and hence could use this very treatment. My recommendation is to get the remastered version of this worthy addition to any jazz lover's cd collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter..., May 4, 2000
By
This review is from: Maiden Voyage (Audio CD)
This music stands up well after more than thirty years. It is essentially the Miles Davis rhythm section of the time--Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams--along with George Coleman and Freddie Hubbard. If you like Wayne Shorter's "Speak no Evil" or the Miles Davis groups of the early 1960s, you will probably like this album as well. Williams and Hubbard are particularly brilliant here. The title cut and "Dolphin Dance" are my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Item, July 27, 2010
By
Nick S. (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
Whether you are student of jazz or just a fan, this is a landmark, must have item for your collection. This is probably one of Herbie Hancock's greatest albums. It helped to establish the fairly young Herbie Hancock as a solo artist and band leader. Prior to this albums release, Hancock was already established as a great sideman. On this album you really get to hear his "voice" and his creative genius. All I can say is that if you don't own this album, your collection is incomplete.

5.0 out of 5 stars HERBIE HANCOCK RETURNS IN `65 WITH THE LANDMARK "MAIDEN VOYAGE" ALBUM...AFTER THE LACKLUSTER SALES OF THE 1964 "EMPYREAN ISLAND", February 25, 2010

This album was pretty much just a follow up to the previous year's "Empyrean Island" album that received warm reviews and sales. The only thing different with this album is the addition of George Coleman on Tenor Sax, which might have made the "Maiden Voyage" album more acceptable. Outside of George Coleman who is playing his buns off! The same goes for Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and of course our main man Herbie Hancock who all came together to do what they do best...And did they deliver! Not only a Top Selling album, but this album has since become a permanent staple in the Blue Note catalog! Key cuts: "Maiden Voyage", "The Eye Of The Hurricane" and "Dolphin Dance". Oh!, and for you first-timers this album is straight-ahead-jazz! To zoom in on Herbie Hancock's finger snappin' tracks from his Blue Note era you might want to buy the Compact Disc entitled "Cantaloupe Island-The Best Of Herbie Hancock". This collection focuses on his most memorable Blue Note recordings like: "Maiden Voyage", "Watermelon Man", and of course "Cantaloupe Island" along with 3 (Three) others, but if you are a Jazz Purist....This is a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vinyl Hancock, January 13, 2010

This review is from: Maiden Voyage (Audio CD)
Excellent album. You probably know what you're getting if you're getting this, so on to the details. This is not a 180g album (and is not advertised as such) that is a 2008 repressing. On the back of the cover it says "Mastered from the analog masters by Ron McMaster." Plenty of 'master' in that statement. The good news is that if you're buying vinyl to get analog sound then this is it.

Further, the cover apperars to be the vintage-looking style from original release complete with blurbage from Herbie and Nora Kelly with the addition of the most current FBI warnings. Manufactured in USA by The Blue Note Label Group - [...].

The CD that comes with this is inside the cover (not the sleeve) in it's own sleeve (not a jewel case). The album had plenty of sleeve dust on it which I removed with my handy microfiber brush. The ...ahem... maiden voyage of Maiden Voyage was fabulous. Played great, sounded great.

with this album boggles my mind. It is one of the best jazz records ever made, and still sounds fresh and hip nearly 40 years after it was recorded.

If for nothing else, listen to Tony Williams on the drums-amazing playing that ushered in a whole new era of jazz drumming.

I'm just discovering jazz, but "Little one" is one of the most relaxing songs I've ever heard. The sensation of peaceful and the relaxatation I've experimented while I've been hearing it, is like being alone on the beach at the end of the day with the red sky over the quite sea.

And that standout track is "Dolphin Dance" - truly lovely. The rest of this I find overrated and a bit on the "difficult" side of things.
