Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Though several of her plays have already been produced-and have won numerous awards-this is the first collection of stories by Ding available in English. Now living in Australia, Ding is a witness to both the Cultural Revolution and the massacre at Tiananmen Square. Her straightforward writing centers on the lives of ordinary people, and she lets us know very intimately what it is like to be part of contemporary Chinese society, shown as a fulminating broth of past and present. Her characters struggle passionately with the same things we all do: family, earning a living, and death. The differences are strictly cultural or political. The stories may appear outrageously conservative at times, but one concerns a child who kills her mother-hardly a complacent act. A good addition to any public library.
