Editorial Reviews

IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES International film star Bruno Cremer brings the beloved Parisian Inspector Maigret to life in this definitive series of filmed adaptations of legendary writer Georges Simenon's bestselling crime novels. Sporting his pipe that seems a nod to Sherlock Holmes, the pragmatic, reserved and refined Maigret investigates murders in his singular unhurried manner and inevitably discovers the truth. To crack his cases he peels back the veneer of seemingly idyllic villages and neighborhoods, exposing the criminals who lurk in all levels of society. Against a backdrop of 1950s Paris and the surrounding French countryside, these original feature-length films pay homage to one of the most brilliant detective minds of the twentieth century.
This set includes episodes 43-48: To Any Lengths, Maigret Failure, Maigret s Boyhood Friend, Maigret has Scruples, Little Pigs Without a Tail, Maigret and the Tramp

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness, MAIGRET Is Still On the Job! June 14, 2013
This is my second experience with the character of MAIGRET - I recently had the good fortune of reviewing SET 7. Having enjoyed most of what I saw there, I was enthusiastic about getting into SET 8. Bruno Cremer is such a delight - he inhabits the role of the seasoned police commissioner who serves almost as a mentor to many younger inspectors with tremendous grace. While I'll admit that I didn't find all of these stories up to the high standards set by the previous collection, there are a few solid winners in here ... and even the bad ones aren't really all that bad.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last three paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come', then read on ...)

As the spoiler rules really don't apply here (these were broadcast several years ago and have been available in previous releases from other outlets), I'll mostly dispense with them in a brief summary for each telefilm, and I'll provide a rating to indicate the quality. When appropriate, I'll even through in a word or two about the program, though methinks if you're already looking into this review then MAIGRET is right up your alley, as he was mine!

"To Any Lengths" (3 out of 5): As much as I wanted to enjoy this tale of an embittered accountant believing he uncovered the impending murder of a fortune teller, it all ends up being far too convoluted for the conventional murder mystery. Suffice it to say, there are several plots under way, and, somehow, all of these players end up with their activities overlapping one another.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Portrayal of Jules Maigret May 10, 2013
Verified Purchase
Simenon would be pleased by the performances given by Bruno Cremer in this series. The supporting staff is outstanding, as well, and the background bring a strong aura of realism to most of the episodes. If you have not yet met Chief Superintendent Maigret, you are missing one of the most believable characters on DVD. Simply put, these are the best detective stories you can find on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cremer as Maigret - THE BEST!! July 17, 2014
Verified Purchase
The Great French Actor Bruno Cremer IS Inspector Maigret. Set in the early 50s just after the war this series captures the seedy aspects of France before it became a tourist mecca. The culture, the language, the mores, the people of France - always fascinating and alluring. Highly recommend this entire series! the mysteries are truly puzzling; Maigret has a special talent that figures out who did what. I watch while on my treadmill; I have to read the subtitles anyway so... Keeps me walking, running, walking...

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch Maigret June 11, 2014

For true Maigret fans set 8 is in my opinion the best. The episodes show his deductive powers at their best
and his compassionate side comes through as well.
