Maigret Doing His Thing, July 31, 2007
Many years ago when I first encountered Simenon's Maigret, I was unimpressed. Now after reading and sometimes rereading the Maigret novels, I am a devoted fan. The Maigret novels are consistently good and do not get into a formula routine. I would say Maigret's strengths are his understanding (even sympathy) for the criminal and his ability to listen. The 3 novels in this book illustrate these talents.
"Maigret's Failure" - Maigret is assigned to protect a wealthy businessman who claims his life is in danger. This man is from Maigret's childhood village. Maigret didn't like him as a boy and likes him less as an obnoxious arrogant tycoon. Maigret fears his dislike is affecting his ability.
"Maigret in Society" - Maigret is assigned to a case where the victim and the most likely suspects are all in the highest levels of French society. Maigret and he feels ill in this new world with different rules.
"Maigret and the Lazy Burglar" - Due to a reorganization of the police, Maigret cannot officially work on a murder case where the victim is a burglar he has known for years. Needless to say, he does indeed 'solve' the murder.

Maigret's career and the many types of humans he must deal with, July 2, 2011
The Maigret mystery book are always good. I have read many of his books years ago and find them interesting, informative and set in the exciting city of Paris. I found this book and decided I needed to read it. These stories take place in two different seasons. The first begins in a very rainy season.
A middle aged woman, an English tourist, has disappeared. Where? Maigret's second case is a man who needs protection. He asks Maigret to have some of his men protect him from who knows. This man had been a school mate of Maigret many years ago. He was disliked at school and became a hated man. He was very wealthy and had became wealthy by taking advantage of everyone he could. He was found dead. Who murdered this man? Many would have liked to see him dead.
The second story begins in May, an exceptionally beautiful May. Maigret is called in the case of a society man, a titled man. This individual has never married but would not because he could not marry the woman he loved. He had a title but not enough money so the woman's family arranged a marriage with a wealthier man. But the two loved each other with a fairy tale love. A prince and princess, this fascinated Maigret a love that was never consumated. Both this man and the woman's husband had mistresses. So Maigret is involved in high society.
The third mystery takes place during an exceptionally cold, harsh winter. A petty crook was found dead. But was he a petty crook? Maigret knew this man slightly and liked him somewhat. The dead man was insignifigant, no one knew him. He was a quiet man who never called attention to himself. Was he as poor as everyone thought? How did he make a living? He was a drifter, moving away, then returning. Who was he?
Maigret deals with many types of people. I recommend these mysteries.
