This review is from: Maigret and the informer (Popular Library mystery) (Paperback)
A body is found on a sidewalk. It's Maurice Marcia, proprietor of the Sardine, a fashionable restaurant patronized by the leading lights of society, the art world and the underworld.
Inspector Louis, who works the Pigalle district, has an informer who often tips him off about crimes by phone, and for no pay. His informer seems to know all about the murder. Louis brings this information to Maigret with a kind of shy pride. He's very happy to be working with the great man. This is not one of my favorite Maigret mysteries, since I prefer crime among ordinary people to crime among mobsters. Nonetheless, there are some interesting characters in the story - the informer himself, his rather sweet girlfriend, the lugubrious Inspector Louis - and the specialists in the forensic lab who love analyzing a fiber, the angle of a stab wound or the projectory of a bullet. There are also some touching moments between Maigret and his wife. So if you're committed to reading every single Maigret, as I am, you'll read this one too. Otherwise you might be better off with Maigret and the Man on the Boulevard, Maigret and the Killer or Maigret and the Bum.
