5.0 out of 5 stars Anything and everything military!, August 3, 2004
This review is from: Mail Call - The Best of Season 2 (DVD)
R. Lee Ermey, a real life Marine gunnery sergeant, is best known for his roles in Full Metal Jacket and Toy Story 1 & 2 (the green army man!). Now, he's got his own show - Mail Call. In this great History Channel original, Gunnery Sergeant Ermey answers people's questions on anything and everything military. With a gung-ho, oo-rah spirit, the Gunny makes the whole thing a heck of a fun ride!

This DVD represents the best of Season two, and has the following seven(!) twenty five minute episodes:

Episode 15 (December 22, 2002) - Sgt. Ermey talks about American Civil War rifles, the first submarine-launched missile, naval deep sea diving, Bowie knives, and hedgechopers.

Episode 17 (January 19, 2003) - Marine electronic training tools, the Greek phalanx, the fastest plane (Russian Foxbat), the fastest tank (American M-18 Hellcat), and naval camouflage.

Episode 18 (January 26, 2003) - Trebuchets, Army organization, the Browning Automatic Rifle, smart-bombs, parachutes, and Boomerangs.

Episode 19 (February 2, 2003) - The Marine's Light Armored Vehicle, Higgin's Landing Crafts, where did the name Doughboy come from, OP-4 training, chain mail, and the origin of the solute.

Episode 20 (February 9, 2003) - The 2.5 ton truck (Deuce and a Half), collecting fat for WW2 war effort, missile silos, the C-17 Loadmaster III, and kilts in battle.

Episode 23 (March 15, 2003) - Medieval weapons, the Lewis Gun, carrier pigeons, combat gliders, TOW missiles, and ejection seats.

Episode 25 (April 6, 2003) - Manned vs. unmanned aircraft, bogies, military helicopters, artillery, and the commando knife.

As you can see, Sgt. Ermey covers a lot! This is a fun show, sure to please the man in your house. I love it, and highly recommend it to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY AND INFORMATIVE, January 27, 2004
This review is from: Mail Call - The Best of Season 2 (DVD)
Even if you don't know the name, you know the face. R. Lee Ermey is, himself, a former marine drill Sergeant who has starred in such movies as Full Metal Jacket and Saving Silverman. He is the prototype Drill Sergeant: Tough and loud.

His TV series, Mail Call, airs on the History Channel so some people may not have ever seen it. Basically, Ermey gets questions from viewers dealing with military issues, such as how various weapons and equipment work, what gear soldiers carry, what they eat in the field, etc...

Ermey goes on to not only answer, but often demonstrate the equipment. Everything from the most modern day tanks, to swords, crossbows, and armor.

Ermey demonstrated the full plate armor, used by knights in the middle ages, and how they fought in all that weight.

Even people who may not be military enthusiasts will like the show due to Ermeys tough, but good-natured personality. Even my wife likes it and finds it quite interesting.

The DVD is a good place to start if for some reason you don't have access to the History Channel.

Want a fun and exciting look at military technology? Well, this is the place to look. Marine Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey looks at everything from ancient weapons and tactics to the most modern ones in the American arsenal. Along the way, Ermey treats you to a lot of fun drill sergeant talk, but in a light hearted way. This is a fun show, sure to please every man!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Show On The History Channel, February 25, 2004
This review is from: Mail Call - The Best of Season 2 (DVD)
As a fan of this show, I really like the DVD of the second season of Mail Call. It highlights the best episodes of the second season and I thought that it was really cool about how Gunny explains the various military hardware and tactics and the way that he does it is phenominal.

I highly recommend this DVD to history and military buffs.
