Fun look at "new kid on the block",
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mail Harry to the Moon (Hardcover)
Before Harry was born, There was ME!
Now there's me. And Harry. Thus begins this delightful picture book about sibling rivalry. Our little protagonist is extremely upset because now that his baby brother has arrived, everything has changed and no one seems to be paying much attention to him. In fact, Harry wants to steal the whole show! Thus different ideas pops into the protagonist's mind--throwing Harry down the toilet, sticking Harry in the zoo, or even better-mailing Harry to the moon! But then one morning, Harry disappears and is nowhere to be found. Now it's up to his jealous older brother--who, by the way, doesn't seem too jealous anymore--to find him. Mail Harry to the Moon is a cute and enjoyable book for very young readers. It's also a nice book to read to young children ages 2 and up. The writing is engaging and the illustrations, simple yet wacky and whimsical, go well with the story. This is a book that will especially appeal to little boys, and one that has an important message for the family. Often young children get jealous with the arrival of a new baby. Mail Harry to the Moon is the perfect story to ease the tension and teach kids that a new family member can be a great thing too. Armchair Interviews agrees.

Sibling rivalry turns into watchful caring as Harry comes to terms with his new role of older brother. Comedic artwork, typical boy humor; my boys are always in stitches!

My Oldest son's favorite book,

I found this book at our public library one day when I was pregnant with our second son. This is such a wonderful and humorous book on the addition of a sibling. Searching through the library and talking to the Librarian, I seemed to find only serious and responsibility type books on being an older sibling. This book highlights the nuances of a little sibling and in the end shows what fun a little brother can be. I've checked this book out so many times, that I'm finally just going to buy it!

Great book!,

I read about this book in a parenting magazine and checked it out from the library. My 4-year-old son and his 3-year-old sister absolutely loved it! They laughed all through the book, making me read it over and over. Now they both can recite it, and even change the words to "mail Amelia (their baby sister) to the moooooon!" This book is so cute, we are going to buy a copy for ourselves!

A big hit,

My 2 year old loves this book. He gets a great kick out of the emotions shown in the drawings and the fact that the older kid is drawn very realistically.

Young children react in different ways to the addition of a new sibling. In this story, baby Harry irritates his older brother (identified only as "me" since he's telling the story first-person). Big brother is tired of the spitting up, wailing, and grabbing that go along with having a baby brother in the house. In fact sometimes he just wants to Mail Harry to the Moon!.
This picture book has simple text that preschoolers can definitely relate to, and a message about familial love (since he decides after all that little brothers aren't all bad).

Having a little brother can be such a bother...oh where will it end? But, when looked at just right, little brothers can be a lot of fun, too. This is a fun book, with nice illustrations and a very fun story. I liked how the book teaches a lesson to children who get a new sibling. And, I must say that my four-year-old also liked the book. Well, that's good enough for me; I like it when she finds books she can make friends with. We both highly recommend this book!

What to Do With an Annoying Younger Sidling?,
By
This review is from: Mail Harry to the Moon (Hardcover)
Mail Harry to the Moon, tackles the age old problem of an only child losing all the attention to a new sibling, and having they daily life and possessions ruined by the new baby who doesn't realise what it's doing. The child narrator who we never learn the name of, in this adventure remembers his childhood so far as being happy in the early years, but then along came Harry. Harry gets all the attention, does things like eat his banana, spits up on him and chews the face of his toy gorilla. Harry narrates his solutions to each of these problems such as throw Harry in the trash, flush him down the toilet, stick him in the zoo and put him back inside his mother. Then one night Harry won't stop screaming, all the narrator wants to do is sleep so he screams back at his father holding Harry, Mail Harry to the Moon. The next morning the narrator wakes up and Harry is gone. Did his wish come true? Did his parents finally listen to him? If so will the life he once enjoyed return?
It's an all right story, nothing brilliant though. The pictures help bring the simple storyline to a higher level as they add more information to what is going on. I would have liked to see a bit more happening to bring the narrator to switch his opinion of wanting Harry around rather than it just seeming to happen. Still if you're a parent of an only child with another on the way it's probably worthwhile picking up. I'd also grab a copy of Mem Fox's Koala Lou which is similarly themed but also adds in the worry through the child's eyes that the parent doesn't love it as much anymore due to the new additions to the family.

We purchased 2 books, one for each of our children's families. I did have a bit of a concern as one of my grandchildren did not need any more ideas on what to do to her brand new baby sister. In our second family, our 2 grandsons are awaiting the arrival of their new baby sister. Our daughter-in-law does a hilarious job when reading aloud to her sons, changing some of the words, but exactly mimicking the cries of her own boys. They love hearing the story over and over! Everyone loves this book!

Big brother Will loves reading about his little brother Harry,
By
This review is from: Mail Harry to the Moon (Hardcover)
This book came just at the right time. Will (will be 3 in August, 2008) just got his glasses so is starting to read. His little brother Harry will be 1 in July. Will loves all the things he can do with Harry like putting him in the trash...he runs around the house expounding that he is going to flush Harry down the toilet and laughs. The best kids book ever for my grandson.
