Wonderful... wonderful... wonderful...,
By Kean Chhay Chang (Vic, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Air Mail Music: Cambodge-Cambodia (Audio CD)
Another wonderful cd containing music from the once and nearly forgotten country of Cambodia. Very enjoyable is the music that I find it so relaxing and soothing, music that soothes the soul and delights the ear. The music is very traditional like most Cambodian orchestras as well as it's music. Mostly the music heard in these recordings are from mahori and may vary according to the songs and musical pieces wedding music called "phleng khar" nuptial music is quite distinct in sound as one can hear from the dulcimer hammering away and other instruments playing their parts in the orchestra. As well as music most of the tracks are accompanied by male and female vocals with their poetical lyrics of love and life's pleasures as most wedding songs describes about how deeps one's love is expressed through metaphors of the nature and the heavens etc... I found it delightful yet I am still speechless as the quality of the music is very sharp and that is what I always look for in the music... since most traditional Cambodian music that I have on tape are pretty poor and the sound quality isn't as good as this one and a few others that I have done my reviews on. However I was very disappointed with the booklet. It actually explained nothing about the music only just a briefing on Cambodian history and how it came to be revived. I know for those listeners out there they must wonder what each of the tracks are etc... their title or the style of music. The cd booklet explained none of this and I found it very disappointing especially from Playa Sound - Sunset France Records, would usually contain a small information about the musical style and the tracks. The music is better than the booklet itself and I guess the phoenix rises from it's ashes which is true for this cd... Great and very rare to have traditional wedding music recorded on cd by Westerners... mostly this type of music is found during wedding ceremony played by a live orchestra or sometimes just on tape if they can't afford the real thing. So it's pretty rare though to have music of this sought being produced but in Cambodia wedding music is produced by the locals in a mass production and you can get different variations on the orchestras too...Therefore wonderful music to delight the soul!
