Book Description

April 1997 7 and upTrue Books-Computers
Completely redesigned for today's young, investigative reader, True Books are an indispensable addition to any collection. Each book guides the reader through the facts that nurture their need to know.

The new, dynamic True Book design features:
-- an inviting and interactive page format
-- a readable and attractive typeface
-- large, bold, and brilliant full-color photographs

The True Books series takes the young reader beyond the standard, fact-filled text by adding avenues for further discovery. Each book includes a variety of sidebars, highlighting extra facts that will fascinate children. In the Important Words section, young readers will find a glossary of words that will both challenge and expand their vocabulary. Each book includes a To Find Out More section, where every curious reader can find a list of related books to read and organizations to contact.

True Books also point readers to the vast electronic universe of information on the Internet. Each book will list:
-- e-mail addresses to help the reader contact individuals and organizations
-- appropriate newsgroups and mailing lists
-- FTP sites to download fun and useful software

Begun in the 1950s, True Books are universally embraced as the definitive nonfiction series for young readers. Now in its third incarnation, the True Books series has once again evolved to meet the needs and tastes of modern readers and educators.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5. A clear, basic introduction to electronic mail. Explanations of what e-mail is, how it works, and the advantages (speed) versus the disadvantages (easily misunderstood) are included. One section is on smileys or "emoticons"?computer symbols used to show emotions, e.g., :-) = smile when read sideways. Common acronyms are defined; safety rules are emphasized. The format is attractive, with many full-color photographs and pictures of screens using Eudora software to locate mailing lists on particular topics. Netiquette is also discussed. A brief bibliography and list of eight Internet sites are appended.?Marion F. Gallivan, Gannon University, Erie, PA

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Grades 1 & 2, January 23, 2000
By A Customer
An excellent book for grades 1 and 2 that offers basic information for those youngsters just starting out with technology as well as more "scientific" meat for those wishing to explore what technology has to offer. Clear, concise, and entertainingly told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise, January 23, 2000
By A Customer
Our school system uses both of Brimner's technology books, E-Mail and The World Wide Web, in our first/second grade computer labs. Young readers (and their teachers) appreciate his clear, concise explanations, while young researchers enjoy the connections he makes between the basic and scientific--and the many safe links he offers for exploration. This balance between basic and scientific, always carefully explained, elevates the text from so many that could well fall into the category of "dumbing down" information. If you wish your young students to grow in their understanding of technology, then this is the book for them.
